Five-Star Program
The AAUW Five Star Program is a framework that helps branches align their work with AAUW’s mission and strategic priorities. Through five focus areas — Advancement, Public Policy & Advocacy, Governance & Sustainability, Programming, and Communications & External Relations — branches can set goals, strengthen their impact, and receive recognition for mission-aligned work.
Each year, branches will complete the AAUW Branch & Affiliate Annual Report, which supports AAUW’s annual affiliate reporting process and provides the primary way for branches to document progress toward Five Star recognition. In this way, the annual report serves both as an important reporting tool and as the mechanism through which branches share work that may count toward Five Star criteria.
The AAUW Branch & Affiliate Annual Report is now open and will remain available from April 16 through June 30. Leaders must complete the report by the deadline and use the form to reflect their branch’s work across the Five Star categories.
To assist leaders in filling out the report you can download the list of questions in advance to review as a branch prior to submission. For the new financial reporting portion of the Annual Report, we also provide a sample balance sheet and income statement that leaders can use when completing the report. Talking points for the Annual Report are also available.

AAUW Branch & Affiliate Annual Report Webinar
AAUW is transitioning the former “branch survey” into the AAUW Branch & Affiliate Annual Report to better reflect its role as an official, organization-wide reporting requirement. This change is driven in part due to new IRS compliance requirements for affiliate-based organizations, which now require AAUW to collect consistent financial and program information from all affiliates participating in the group exemption.

What is the purpose of the Five Star Program?
The Five Star Program is AAUW’s framework for helping branches build sustainable, mission-aligned, and accountable work across five areas: Advancement, Public Policy & Advocacy, Governance & Sustainability, Programming, and Communications & External Relations. It gives branches a roadmap for setting goals, highlighting impact, and being recognized for their accomplishments.
How can a branch earn a star?
Branches earn a star by meeting the criteria in one of the five Five Star categories. Branches will document eligible work through the AAUW Branch & Affiliate Annual Report and, where applicable, through AAUW national records and other AAUW reporting processes.
What is the AAUW Branch & Affiliate Annual Report?
The AAUW Branch & Affiliate Annual Report is the annual reporting process through which branches share key information about their leadership, activities, and mission-aligned work. For branches, it also serves as the primary way to document progress toward Five Star recognition. In previous years this was called the Annual Branch Survey.
Is completing the annual report required?
Yes. The annual report is part of AAUW’s broader affiliate reporting process. Branches must complete it by the stated deadline and contact AAUW promptly if they have questions or anticipate difficulty in doing so.
How does the annual report relate to the Five Star Program?
The annual report is the mechanism branches use to document work that may count toward Five Star. Completing the annual report is an important reporting requirement, while stars are awarded based on whether a branch meets the published criteria in each category.
Do states complete the annual report too, and are they part of Five Star?
AAUW’s affiliate reporting expectations apply more broadly to branches and state organizations. So, while state organizations will be required to complete the annual report, the Five Star Program itself remains a branch framework unless AAUW announces a separate recognition structure for states.
When will AAUW share the annual report timeline and next year’s Five Star criteria?
AAUW will share the annual report timeline, instructions, and the next fiscal year’s Five Star criteria through leader communications and on this page. Leaders should watch Membership Matters, AAUW national emails, and related webinars for current dates and deadlines.
What support does AAUW National provide to branches working toward Five Star criteria and annual reporting requirements?
AAUW National provides resources, toolkits, webinars, leader communications, and direct staff support to help branches understand annual reporting expectations and work toward Five Star criteria. Leaders should also watch for archived webinar resources and additional guidance shared throughout the year in newsletters such as Membership Matters.
Why is the Advancement Star particularly important?
The Advancement Star reflects a branch’s support for AAUW’s mission through philanthropy and member giving. Because all Advancement criteria are based on AAUW national data, branches may receive progress information from AAUW during the fiscal year to help them understand where they stand.
Does the “$30 per member” Advancement criterion mean every member must personally give $30?
No. This criterion is based on a branch wide average, not on every individual member making a $30 gift. AAUW calculates progress by comparing the branch’s total eligible giving against its total membership for that fiscal year.
What actions are encouraged under the Public Policy & Advocacy category?
Actions can include appointing a public policy chair, conducting meetings with elected officials or their staff, participating in advocacy efforts such as lobby days, and holding programs related to policy issues that advance AAUW’s mission.
What is the role of the Governance & Sustainability category in the Five Star Program?
This category focuses on practices that help branches remain organized, accountable, inclusive, and prepared for the future. This can include leadership succession planning, annual reporting completion, appointing key volunteer roles, and taking steps that strengthen branch sustainability and alignment with AAUW expectations.
How does the Programming category contribute to earning a Star?
The Programming category recognizes branches that offer mission-aligned programs that engage members, serve communities, and advance equity for women and girls. Branches should review the current year’s criteria for the specific activities that qualify.
How does the Communications & External Relations category contribute to earning a Star?
This category recognizes branches that communicate consistently about AAUW’s mission and work. Actions may include designating a communications point person, sharing mission-aligned content, incorporating AAUW national information into newsletters or outreach, and helping ensure leaders stay connected to AAUW communications.
