Social Justice &
Civil Rights

Why It Matters

AAUW advocates vigorous enforcement of and full access to civil and constitutional rights for all people — across race, ethnicity, age, socioeconomic status, religious beliefs, disability, gender identity and sexual orientation, and geographic location.

We believe in the need to end white supremacy and address structural and systemic racism. Efforts to advance racial, ethnic, and gender justice must be embedded into every policy initiative.

Societies thrive when women have equitable participation in education, the workforce, and policy decisions. Building on decades of advocacy, AAUW continues to call for recognition and publication of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) as the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The ERA would, once and for all, guarantee constitutional gender equality.

LGBTQ+ Rights

AAUW advocates civil and constitutional rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, who continue to face discrimination in schools, workplaces, and public life. Unless and until LGBTQ+ people enjoy the same rights and freedoms as their fellow Americans, the nation’s promise of equal justice under law will remain unfulfilled.

Freedom from Violence

Key to women’s economic security and participation in society is the freedom from violence and fear of violence in schools, workplaces, homes, and communities. AAUW supports policies to end gender-based violence, including reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

Voting Rights

Our democracy works when everyone can fully participate. AAUW advocates expanding voting rights to promote equitable political participation and ensure all Americans have the same access and right to vote.
