AAUW Statement on Setback for Paycheck Fairness Act

The following is a statement by AAUW CEO Kim Churches:

After inching so close to finally seeing the passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act, we are deeply dismayed that this important piece of legislation failed on a procedural vote in the U.S. Senate today. Our society will not recover from the pandemic unless we build back our economy so that every individual in every industry can thrive, not just survive. This means ensuring women can work with equality, safety and dignity, starting with pay equity. For more than two decades, AAUW has fiercely advocated for the PFA, which would give women the tools they need to challenge pay discrimination and to provide incentives to employers to comply with the law. We call on all elected officials to listen to voters, who overwhelming support pay equity, and work to pass this important bill. We vow to keep up the fight.
