Greetings, AAUW Members,
In concert with the AAUW Board of Directors and the Strategic Planning Task Force, AAUW was honored to launch AAUW’s strategic plan in August 2018. The plan contains the goals and objectives that will guide AAUW’s focus in the coming years. If you haven’t yet read the strategic plan, please take some time to do so. As we think ahead about our mission work locally, regionally and nationally – and how every member can participate in the strategic plan – we encourage you to watch the following video and read the materials below to learn ways we can all work together to achieve real change for women and girls.

Focus: Economic Security and Pay Equity
For the 2019 fiscal year (which includes fall 2018 and spring 2019), we are focusing on economic security and pay equity. AAUW is working towards a goal of ensuring livelihoods for women by achieving pay equity by 2030 through several key objectives:
Champion pay equity federally and in all U.S. states and territories.
Lead the nation in providing salary negotiation programs for employees and employers.
Train 10 million women in salary negotiations by 2022.
All AAUW affiliates and members have a critical role to play in achieving pay equity by 2030, and specific projects to consider for the coming year are detailed below.

Members Mobilize a Million
We need your help to reach our ambitious goal of training 10 million women in salary negotiation by 2022. Please join us in the Members Mobilize a Million challenge that officially launches in October!
AAUW Work Smart Online is a new version of AAUW’s successful Work Smart salary negotiation workshops. Members Mobilize a Million encourages every AAUW member to take AAUW Work Smart Online themselves AND get 20 friends, contacts, coworkers, neighbors, daughters, granddaughters and other relatives and anyone else you know to take AAUW Work Smart Online.
AAUW Work Smart Online can be accessed through any computer or mobile device and takes about 90 minutes complete, giving participants the tools and skills they need to successfully negotiate their salaries.
AAUW Work Smart Online is a key initiative in support of AAUW’s goal of training 10 million women in salary negotiation by 2022. Join the Million Member Challenge and help us meet this bold goal!

What can states do to support the Members Mobilize a Million Challenge?
Promote Members Mobilize a Million and AAUW Work Smart Online in your newsletters, at meetings, and on your state AAUW website (if your website is managed by AAUW National, the Site Resources team will update it).
Ask members to send Work Smart Online to contacts by using our draft email templates for members and fellows. Also lead a social media campaign through your state social media sites using the hashtags #WorkSmart, #AAUWWorkSmart, #PayEquity, #EqualPay, and #WomenNegotiateNow.
Help branches with their social media and other promotion efforts. Ensure that your state leadership know about the tool and can serve as resources for members and branch leadership.
States with the most participation in Members Mobilize a Million will receive special recognition! AAUW’s CEO Kim Churches will speak at the state convention for the state that has the most participation in proportion to the number of women in that state’s workforce. Get your state and branch members to participate today!
What can branches and YWTF affiliates do to support the Members Mobilize a Million Challenge?
- Schedule a branch or YWTF meeting and invite all members to come with their laptops or tablets to take AAUW Work Smart Online together as a group!
- Promote Members Mobilize a Million and AAUW Work Smart Online in your newsletters, at meetings, and on your branch or YWTF AAUW website (if your website is managed by AAUW National, the Site Resources team will update it). Ask members to send Work Smart Online to 20 contacts by using our draft email templates.
- Lead a social media campaign through your branch or YWTF social media sites and train members how to promote Work Smart Online by emailing the link to their networks and promoting it on their personal social media using the hashtags #WorkSmart, #AAUWWorkSmart, #PayEquity, #EqualPay, and #WomenNegotiateNow.
- Brainstorm about local community information boards, like at your local library or community center. Ask for volunteers to speak with library or community center staff about sponsoring a local “class” of AAUW Work Smart Online. Many libraries and community centers have computer labs and may be willing to schedule some dedicated time for residents to take the course.
- Work Smart Bookmarks
Download and print these bookmarks using your Office Depot/Office Max benefit member discount. Distribute them at events, meetings, libraries and campuses to help spread the word about AAUW’s free online salary negotiation tool.

Take the course yourself and get 20 others to take it too. Send the link to your contact list in email using these templates and post to social media, too.
Resources Road Map
In order to train 10 million women by 2022, we need to think big! We need a nationwide infrastructure of strategic partnerships to help us create largescale initiatives. You know your communities best. By working with AAUW National, we can connect to those that share AAUW’s mission, whether they be community leaders, non-profits, corporations, association, or government officials.
Creating a resources road map is simply a way to identify resources in your community, and your connections to them, that could help build and advance AAUW’s work. Our goal of training 10 million women by 2022 is bold, but achievable if we focus on large scale initiatives, like the one recently announced in Kansas and Missouri. Looking at resources at the state and local levels will help you and AAUW identify potential coalition or funding partners for these large scale initiatives.

AAUW National is pleased to share resources and ideas to align your state convention agendas with the strategic plan focus for this year: economic security. We are asking each state to devote a significant portion of its state convention agenda to AAUW’s efforts to ensure productive and secure livelihoods for women and girls. We invite you to select the activities that best fit your strengths and interests to engage your members in AAUW’s efforts to achieve pay equity by 2030. We plan to achieve this by using a three-pronged approach: 1) working with employers to improve workplace cultures 2) continuing our legislative efforts to advance pay equity and 3) training millions of women across the nation in effective salary negotiation.
Your state is encouraged to open its economic security programming to the public to enrich conversations from diverse audiences, engage non-members in AAUW priorities, and to model best practices for future branch events.
Recommendations based on convention attendance size
All State Conventions will receive:
- Virtual or in-person opening welcome message from a national leader
- Short (three-five minute) virtual presentation on economic security
- Links to promote materials for AAUW Work Smart Online
Potential Activities: (Select which ones work best for your state.)
- For keynote speakers, we encourage you to choose presenters who will address issues surrounding economic security, such as members of your local women’s commission, fellows working on economic security issues, etc.
- Support Members Mobilize a Million our new initiative to encourage members across the country to take and share AAUW Work Smart Online with 20 family members, friends and other community members so that we can reach our goal to train 10 million women in effective salary negotiation by 2022. Encourage all attendees to take the online course and have computers available for use at the convention.
- Conduct a Resource Road Map exercise to determine the state’s best assets and resources to advance the economic security agenda. Links to this exercise will be available on the AAUW website in January.
- Hold a fundraising event around economic security
- Panels/trainings/roundtables on state-wide advocacy efforts around economic security/equal pay
Share Your Success With Us
AAUW National Staff will also provide an online form to each state so we can catalog, share and recognize your actions.
Advocacy has been a key part of AAUW’s history and success due in no small part to the dedication of our many AAUW members. Advocating is as simple as finding a cause that motivates you and unites you with others to take action toward that common goal. You can be a part of this important work by advocating for improved local, state, and federal pay equity policies.
We have a lot of material online so that you can learn more about the status of pay equity laws in your state. You can also reference our How-To Advocacy Guides to help develop your skills as an impactful advocate. Whether by building public support for pay equity in your community, organizing a lobby day to persuade lawmakers to take action, or utilizing AAUW’s Two-Minute Activist tool to join our fight for fair pay, AAUW members are uniquely positioned to make progress toward stronger pay equity policies.

Equal Pay Day is April 2, 2019. If you have begun planning or have annual traditions for Equal Pay Day, we’d love to learn about them! We’re grateful for the information you provide as we plan for national efforts around Equal Pay Day in 2019.
Local Work Smart Workshop Support
AAUW Work Smart Online is a free online course that can be taken by anyone at any time. Your state and branch can participate in the Members Mobilize a Million Challenge, where member every member can take the course and share it with of their contacts and promote it in your community!
For those areas where Work Smart in-person workshops are taking place this year, consider providing critical support, such as with registration, providing food and beverages (within the guidelines and rules of the venue), and helping with set up and tear down of the workshop.
What can states do to support Work Smart workshops?
State leadership can visit AAUW Work Smart to see if there is a workshop in your state. If there is, encourage state members, branches, and branch members in the area to support workshops by contacting AAUW National at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If there isn’t a workshop in your state, participate in the Members Mobilize a Million Challenge or consider a resource road map project as a spring priority for your state leadership. This is an excellent way to identify the resources in your state that could support a large scale workshop initiative.
What can branches and YWTF affiliates do to support Work Smart workshops?
Branch and YWTF leadership can visit AAUW Work Smart to see if there is a workshop in your local area. If there is, encourage state members, branches, and branch members in the area to support workshops by contacting AAUW National at email@example.com.
If there isn’t a workshop in your area, consider a resource road map project for a spring meeting. This is an excellent way to identify the resources in your area that could support a large scale workshop initiative.
