AAUW opposes DC Vouchers
On April 28, 2016, AAUW opposed H.R. 4901, which would reauthorize the DC voucher program. Public funds should only be used for public education — not private or religious school voucher schemes that benefit only a few. D.C.’s severely mismanaged and ineffective voucher program should not be reauthorized. Furthermore, private schools participating in the D.C. voucher program are not subject to all federal civil rights laws and do not face the same public accountability standards that all public schools must meet. Schools that do not provide students with these basic civil rights protections should not be funded with taxpayer dollars. AAUW is disappointed that amendments which would have strengthened civil rights protections, specifically those that enforce Title IX, are not included in this bill and were not allowed under the closed rule.
