Take Action to Close the Gender Pay Gap on Equal Pay DayApril 10, 2018
Time: All day
Tuesday, April 10, marks Equal Pay Day, the symbolic day when women’s earnings “catch up” to men’s earnings from the previous year. The typical woman working full time, year-round in the United States is paid just 80 cents for every dollar a man is paid, which means she has to work until April 10, 2018, to be paid as much as the typical man took home by December 31, 2017. Sound fair to you?
Equal Pay Day marks a powerful moment for national action. There are many things individuals, employers, and elected officials can do to close the gender pay gap. Here are ways you can take action on pay equity in observance of Equal Pay Day.
1. Tell Congress that women can’t afford to wait for equal pay.
Urge your members of Congress to support strong, effective legislation to close the gender pay gap. AAUW has long called for federal action to address the gender pay gap, but we know that not all reforms are created equal. We want to see meaningful solutions such as the passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act.
2. Join the official #EqualPayDay Twitter storm.
Raise your voice! Join the Twitter storm from 2 to 3 p.m. ET on April 10. We’ll share data, explain the pay gap, suggest solutions, and — with your help — agitate for change. Follow @AAUW and use the hashtag #EqualPayDay.

3. Empower the women in your community to negotiate their salaries.
Our AAUW Work Smart and AAUW Start Smart salary negotiation programs are helping close the gender pay gap, one workshop at a time. Informed by our research, the workshops are designed to empower women with the skills and confidence they need to successfully negotiate their salary and benefits. Attend a workshop, train to become a facilitator, or host the program for your campus or community.
4. Become an AAUW member.
AAUW has been studying the gender pay gap since 1894, when we first analyzed the pay of college-educated women. Today we fight to close the pay gap by offering salary negotiation workshops, providing case support to plaintiffs seeking fair pay, and advocating legislative action on equal pay at the federal, state, and local levels. By becoming a member today, you can amplify our work to improve the lives of women and girls in your community and beyond.
This year AAUW has observed or will observe the following additional equal pay days.
February 22, 2018
Asian American women’s Equal Pay Day
May 30, 2018
Mothers’ Equal Pay Day
August 7, 2018
Black women’s Equal Pay Day
