It’s that time of year again — soon women will come together to “celebrate” Equal Pay Day. The typical woman working full time, year-round in the United States is paid just 79¢ for every dollar a man is paid, which means she has to work until April 12, 2016, to be paid as much as the typical man took home by December 31, 2015. Sound fair to you?

Join @AAUW, @AAUWPolicy, and other fair pay supporters in our #EqualPayDay tweet chat and Twitter storm on Tuesday, April 12! We’re starting the day with a tweet chat at 1:30 p.m. ET with two women who know the devastating consequences of the pay gap far too well. Fair pay advocates Lilly Ledbetter (namesake of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act) and Aileen Rizo (sometimes called the “California Lilly Ledbetter” and a plaintiff in one of AAUW’s Legal Advocacy Fund cases) will tell their stories, answer questions, and discuss why equal pay is so important to women and families.

Then, starting at 2 p.m., our Twitter storm will start. We’ll be raising awareness — and our voices — around the 21 percent pay gap the typical woman working full time faces. We’ll urge Congress to finally ensure that ALL women are paid what they’re worth. Feel free to use the sample tweets and shareable images below to spread the word that women and families can’t wait for equal pay!

While April 12 represents Equal Pay Day for women all together, the pay gap tends to get even bigger when it’s broken down by race. While women working full time on average are paid 79 percent of what white, non-Hispanic men are paid, the percentages are different for different women: Asian American women (90 percent), white women (78 percent),  African American women (64 percent), Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander women (62 percent), Hispanic women (54 percent), and American Indian and Alaska Native women (59 percent).

Keep in mind that different pay gaps mean different equal pay days. This year, AAUW has observed or will observe equal pay days for

  • Asian American women: March 15, 2016
  • African American women: August 23, 2016
  • Native American women: September 14, 2016
  • Latina women: November 1, 2016
