AAUW’s 2020 Art Contest

This year, AAUW is giving special preference to

submissions that reflect our mission and values.

We hear a lot about the gender gap — in salary, in leadership roles, and in math and science fields. But one of the most long-standing discrepancies is in the art world. For centuries, women artists were not encouraged or even recognized. The few who broke through were often discredited simply because they were not men.

Times have changed, but inequality persists: Only 30% of artists represented by commercial galleries are women, and women working in arts professions are paid almost $20,000 less per year than men. This is what motivates AAUW to host an annual art contest. Our goal is to give women artists the attention they deserve.

While all entries are accepted, we hope you will consider works that might speak to AAUW’s mission of advancing gender equity. The winning entries will be featured in a collection of note-cards mailed to AAUW members in the spring.
