In 2014 Elba Moise interviewed Chelsea Clinton in front of a room full of 1,000 of her peers: other college students who cared about empowering women in their campus community. Her journey to that interview began with her AAUW membership.
Interested in the possibility of that kind of engagement? As a student associate of AAUW you join a lifelong community of leaders who are working to educate and empower women and girls. AAUW campus leadership programs help you build your résumé, develop leadership skills, take action on issues you care about, and connect with other women leaders across the globe.
But if that’s not enough, here are six more reasons to join:
1. Become a campus change agent!
Apply for a Campus Action Project grant and receive up to $5,000 to create change on your campus. You can also join one of AAUW’s student organizations to raise awareness about campus sexual assault, combat stereotypes associated with women of color, or take action on other issues important to you. Find your campus’s AAUW student organization or start your own!
2. Network with leaders, mentors, and friends.
Join a network of more than 170,000 AAUW members who support women’s education and empowerment. Connect with your local AAUW branch or Younger Women’s Task Force (YWTF) chapter to receive mentorship from members who are passionate about women’s equity. You can also engage with nearly 800 other college students at the annual National Conference for College Women Student Leaders and bring what you learn from transformative workshops, keynote speakers, and the Women of Distinction back to your school!
3. Develop leadership skills.
AAUW campus leadership programs empower you to seek out leadership opportunities and inspire students on your campus to create social change. Advise AAUW on the needs of college students by applying to the AAUW National Student Advisory Council, or help spread the word about our programs and leadership opportunities for students as an AAUW campus ambassador.
4. Find your voice.
Attend an AAUW Start Smart workshop to learn the skills needed to negotiate your salary and help close the gender pay gap. You can also move to the front lines of social justice by becoming a Two-Minute Activist and receiving our public policy newsletter Washington Update for the latest legislative news and advocacy tips.
5. Join the legacy of women who have changed and will change the world.
Since 1881 AAUW members have shaped the world. Our student associates are emerging leaders, and we want to support them throughout every stage of their leadership journey.
6. Enjoy the perks!
You’ll receive a Campus Connections newsletter to update you on leadership program applications, AAUW research, and professional development opportunities. You also will receive access to the digital AAUW Outlook, our award-winning magazine that explores issues affecting women in education and the workplace, including Title IX, sexual harassment, and work-life balance.
You’ll also receive priority consideration in the application review process for such programs as Campus Action Projects and the National Student Advisory Council and, best of all, you’ll receive a free year of AAUW membership after you graduate!
Join AAUW, tell your friends, and start taking action on the issues that matter to you today!
