It’s been a busy year. With your support in 2017 we helped pass equal pay legislation in many states, expanded our salary negotiation workshops, pushed against attempts to weaken Title IX, and tirelessly fought for legislative action to ensure equity for women and girls. Amid all of our hard work, we thought we’d add a dose of holiday cheer with these remixed songs — all written in the spirit of our mission. Don’t forget to share your favorites!

Just hear that spare change jingling, ring-ting-tingling, too.

Women in the United States typically are paid only 80 cents on the dollar compared to men. Because of the gender pay gap women have less disposable income and a harder time repaying student loans. These setbacks compound over a lifetime and can lead to financial insecurity for entire families. That’s why AAUW is fighting to close the pay gap by offering salary negotiation workshops, providing case support to plaintiffs seeking fair pay, and advocating for legislative action on equal pay at the federal, state, and local levels. Join the fight for equal pay by telling your members of Congress to take action.

The weather outside is frightful, but equal rights are so delightful!

Title IX, passed into federal law in 1972, prohibits sex discrimination in education, including sexual harassment and assault at schools. But its work is not done. According to our research, nearly half of students in grades 7–12 experienced harassment, including 56 percent of girls and 40 percent of boys. AAUW’s research also shows that K–12 schools as well as colleges and universities are severely underreporting the number of incidents of sexual harassment and violence that occur. It’s time for the Department of Education and schools to enforce Title IX, not undermine it. Student civil rights depend on it. Tell your members of Congress to stand up for gender equity in education.

Everybody knows closing the gender gap in STEM helps to make the season bright!

While girls are studying and excelling in science and math more than ever before, this achievement has not been matched with a similar rise in the representation of women working in these fields. Today just 12 percent of engineers and 26 percent of computing professionals are women. Stereotypes and biases play a large role in impeding women and girl’s access to STEM. Girls who associate math and science with boys (an example of implicit bias) spend less time studying math and are less likely to pursue a career in a STEM field. Our hands-on STEM resources take the first step toward inspiring girls to foster their science and tech skills, and our research and advocacy push for legislative action. Tell Congress to take meaningful action to broaden participation in STEM.
