Take Two Minutes to Double Your Impact and Celebrate AAUW’s Birthday

November 09, 2017

Three attendees at the 2017 National Conference for College Women Student Leaders stand in front of an AAUW banner and jump in the air celebrating. Thank you for helping AAUW raise $13,600 in honor of our 136th birthday, but you can still give to further our mission. Donate now!

This year, #GivingTuesday is special. It falls on AAUW’s anniversary — Tuesday, November 28 — when we will celebrate 136 years of helping to level the playing field for women and girls. Beginning at 8 a.m. ET on November 28, donations made to AAUW through Facebook will be matched dollar for dollar by Facebook and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. You can help us make the most of this matching opportunity by taking two minutes to create a Facebook fundraiser on behalf of AAUW.

Facebook makes raising funds easy, exciting, and secure: When you create a fundraiser you can set a goal and track your progress, and your friends and donors can enter their payment information securely and easily through Facebook. Creating a Facebook fundraiser takes only a few clicks! Read our instructions.

Don’t miss out on the chance to double your impact
to advance gender equity for women and girls!

All gifts made through Facebook support the AAUW fund. Your tax-deductible contribution will enable AAUW to advocate for pay equity legislation in all 50 states. It will also fuel our research to provide tangible solutions for women and girls. And it will help teach millions of women and girls to negotiate their salaries and become leaders in their fields. Because of the match, every dollar you raise means not one but two steps toward equity. Thank you for helping build a brighter future for women and girls.

Not on Facebook? You can still support AAUW’s work by donating now through our website.

Renee, Will funds go back to the branch that creates the fundraiser? We have local committees that raise funds to go for local scholarships and tech trek. It sounds like the money raised on local fundraisers all go to national, for their equity legislation. Is that correct? Could we designate it to go to our local tech trek, for example?

    Please respond asap.

Great question. Donations made through the steps above will go toward AAUW national, specifically the AAUW Fund. These donations will help AAUW teach more women and girls salary negotiation skills, push for equal pay legislation, expand enforcement of Title IX in our schools and colleges, and so much more.

For more information about Facebook fundraisers, check out our instructions for creating a fundraiser at https://www.aauw.org/resource/how-to-create-a-facebook-fundraiser/. The way Facebook designed the fundraiser function, only individuals can currently create a fundraiser and those gifts are for the national AAUW Fund. However, engaging with your branch members on social media and using Facebook to promote other fundraising strategies is always a good idea.

  2. Sandy Kirkpatrick says:

If individual members use this to create a fundraiser on their individual Facebook profiles right now and donations come in prior to November 28, will they qualify for the Gates foundation match? If not, is it your recommendation to wait until the early morning of Nov 28 to post this on our Facebook profiles?

    • Renee Davidson Renee Davidson says:

Sandy, the Gates and Facebook match applies to donations made beginning at 8 a.m. on November 28, so you’re right that it’s best to hold donations for that time in order to ensure that your contribution is doubled. That being said, we recommend that you create your fundraiser now. That way you can start spreading the word to your Facebook friends and gain support in advance! And of course, donations at any time are helpful. If you wish, you can advertise the November 28 match through your Facebook fundraiser and encourage you network to wait until then to donate. Thank you for your support!
