Let’s Help Close the Gender Pay Gap This #GivingTuesday

November 10, 2015

It’s holiday season, and one thing is clear: The gender pay gap is hitting women and families hard. And it’s not going away on its own. Our 2015 #GivingTuesday campaign is all about empowering women by helping close the gender pay gap.

While strides have been made since the Equal Pay Act was signed into law in 1963, in 2014, women typically were still paid only 79 cents for every dollar paid to men. And the pay gap hurts mothers and women of color even worse. African American women typically are paid 63 percent of what white men are paid. Hispanic and Latina women face the largest gap, at 54 percent of white men’s earnings.

This Giving Tuesday, AAUW is fighting to change that. But we need your help!

Altogether, the gap costs a typical woman hundreds of thousands of dollars over the course of her career. The pay gap means that women are more likely than men to live in poverty, struggle with the burden of student debt, and experience economic insecurity in retirement. And things aren’t getting much better. According to our research, the gender pay gap has barely budged in a decade. If we’re going to close the gender pay gap, we need you to make a tax-deductible gift to our 2015 Giving Tuesday campaign today!

We’ve found that the answer to the world’s greatest problems lies in empowering women and girls. That starts with ensuring women’s economic security.

Giving Tuesday, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, is a day to give back to the causes you care about. Donating to AAUW this Giving Tuesday means you’re taking action to empower women and ensure gender equality. At a time when a record 40 percent of U.S. homes are led by women breadwinners, the pay gap is harming hundreds of thousands of women and families across the country. You can help change that. Donate to AAUW’s Giving Tuesday campaign today, and together we can close the gender pay gap.

We can’t achieve equal pay alone.

AAUW educates the public and our nation’s leaders on the impact of pay inequality, and we empower individual women to take a stand through advocacy and hands-on salary negotiation training. But we can’t do it alone. If we’re going to close this gap, we need support from change-makers committed to securing women’s equality and economic security. Whether it’s a one-time donation or a monthly gift, every dollar you give means a step toward equality for women and girls.
