These AAUW Opportunities Can Make Your School Year Even Better

October 01, 2015

Phew! You made it through another day of the semester. And as you move from classes to co-curriculars, we want to make sure you know about the unique AAUW opportunities that you can take advantage of now and throughout the school year.

As the leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls since 1881, AAUW has deep roots in the academic community. We believe that education is the first step toward success, and we help students take that step through programs that build leadership skills and confidence.

But we know that it takes an entire community to create a rich and vibrant academic environment. So whether you’re a student or campus professional, there’s an opportunity for you to make the school year great, any time of the year.

1. Bolster the movement for equity on your campus.

Belonging to a community that fights for women is powerful. Student organizations take AAUW’s mission to the next level through campus events and programming. Student organization members gain leadership skills, create change on campus, address discrimination, and connect with a global community. When you join one of over 80 AAUW student organizations or start your own, you meet like-minded students who are ready to take up the fight for gender equity.

2. Get funding for that bright idea.

One of the world’s largest sources of funding for graduate women, AAUW’s fellowships and grants program provides about $4 million annually to help women pursue higher education, including in fields where women are underrepresented. With the cost of education on the rise, AAUW’s funding makes a difference in the lives of women and in their communities. Encourage the women you know to apply for a fellowship or grant!

3. Help choose the next class of women scholars.

AAUW is seeking new talent and expertise for each of the four fellowships and grants selection panels. If you have academic or professional experience in helping advance equity for women and girls, we’re looking for you! Help women and break through barriers by serving on an AAUW fellowships selection panel. Applications are due in October.

4. Make moves on those grad school dreams.

Looking for the next step on your path to success? Register for AAUW’s Virtual Graduate School Fair, which will take place in October. The virtual fair will connect motivated students with a diverse group of graduate programs that are looking to recruit top candidates. The best part is, you can do it all from your laptop: Log on, take notes, and make moves.

5. Get funding to bring an educational event to campus.

Apply now for AAUW’s Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) Campus Outreach Grants, which provide up to $750 in funding for AAUW branches or student organizations to host on-campus events that help teach college students about gender equity issues and the civil rights laws that protect against gender-based discrimination. A Campus Outreach Grant is a great opportunity for AAUW branches to work with local campuses and for AAUW student organizations to expand their reach.

6. Build your résumé and become a better leader at the same time.

AAUW’s many programs offer students invaluable leadership and skill-building opportunities, all while giving you the chance to take action on gender equity issues that matter most to you. When you join AAUW as a student or as an e-student affiliate, you become part of a community of new mentors and friends who want to help you succeed. You also gain access to the tools you need to bring about change, whether that’s in your own life with salary negotiation workshops, or in your community, through Campus Leadership Programs.

No matter your role on campus, AAUW connects you with the people, programs, and resources you need to make a difference. When you take advantage of these opportunities and follow your passions, you can help effect positive change for women and girls not just in your school environment, but in the society we all share.
