AAUW National Convention Kick-Off Luncheon

March 19, 2009

Finding downtown St. Louis lively with a St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 14, more than 80 AAUW members, guests, and potential volunteers got in the celebratory spirit and kicked off the last leg of preparations for the AAUW 2009 National Convention in St. Louis at a luncheon and training session at the Renaissance Grand & Suites Hotel.

Jill Birdwhistell, AAUW’s director of strategic advancement, was our guest speaker, and she energized attendees with descriptions of AAUW’s new structure and action plans. Donna Tschiffely, convention manager, gave attendees a tour of the convention facilities.

AAUW members from across Missouri, as well as those from the Illinois side of the metro area, came to participate in volunteer training conducted by members of the Convention Procedures Committee ─ chair Dana Cox, Malinda Gaul, Barbara Link, and Susan Youngdahl. Also assisting were Coco Siewert, AAUW parliamentarian, and members of the Local Arrangements Committee ─ chair Lynne Roney, Diane Ludwig, Patricia Shores, and Julie Triplett. Shirley Breeze, Southwest central regional director and AAUW board member, attended as well.

The event was an expanded version of the AAUW St. Louis Metro (MO) Interbranch Council’s annual spring luncheon. Guests were welcomed by Nancy Gerber, IBC president and member of the AAUW Ferguson-Florissant (MO) Branch. Teri Brecht, president of the AAUW St. Charles (MO)_Branch, made the luncheon arrangements. Other St. Louis-area branches that attended were AAUW Ballwin-Chesterfield (MO) Branch, AAUW Creve Coeur (MO) Branch, AAUW Kirkwood-Webster Groves (MO) Branch, and AAUW St. Louis (MO) Branch.

Members were impressed with the beautiful hotel setting, which combines lovely historic features with modern convention facilities. The Washington Avenue location is alive with new lofts, restaurants, and shops. Metro Link light rail connects the airport with downtown, and the hotel is just a few blocks off I-70. St. Louis Metro AAUW members are excited to welcome convention goers!
