International Coalitions

AAUW’s work extends globally through membership in coalitions to support human rights treaties, partnerships with international organizations such as the United Nations, and the promotion of major events such as International Women’s Day and International Day of the Girl Child.

United Nations

Through our special consultative status with the United Nations, AAUW has the honor of making sure that U.N. policies include women and girls. We promote respect for human rights and U.N. work in the United States through a series of coalitions and working groups.

U.N. Association of the United States of America

UNA-USA is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to building understanding of and support for the ideals and work of the United Nations among the American people.

U.S. National Committee for U.N. Women

The U.S. National Committee for U.N. Women supports the mission of U.N. Women, which works toward social, political, and economic equality for women and girls around the world. Members and supporters are men, women, and children in cities around the country who give their time and resources to support a world where women of all ages have access to education and employment opportunities and sustainable livelihoods, enabling them to live free from gender-based violence.

U.S. Global Leadership Coalition

This network comprises 400 businesses and nongovernmental organizations, national security and foreign policy experts, and leaders in business, religious groups, academia, and communities from all 50 states. All these groups work together to support a smart, powerful approach of elevating diplomacy and development alongside defense in order to build a better, safer world.

Half the Sky Movement

The Half the Sky Movement is igniting the change needed to put an end to the oppression of women and girls worldwide — the defining issue of our time. Inspired by journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, the movement brings together video, websites, games, blogs, and other educational tools to not only raise awareness of women’s issues but to also provide concrete steps toward fighting these problems and empowering women. Change is possible, and you can be part of the solution.

Clinton Global Initiative (2013–15)

As a strategic partner of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), AAUW was called upon to provide a gender lens for key issues facing women and girls around the world — participating in CGI’s flagship meetings and advising students working on CGI University commitments.
