Our Stories

Shireen Lewis
A former AAUW American Fellow, Shireen Lewis came up with the idea for a women’s education organization while she finished her undergraduate degree. And when she later launched her nonprofit, SisterMentors, she came straight back to AAUW for support. With a Community Action Grant, Lewis was able to move forward with her work creating more opportunities for women of color in doctorate programs. Since 1997, Lewis’ foundation has directly helped more than 30 women of color earn doctorates. Plus, she paid it forward when she came back to help select the next crop of brilliant AAUW fellows. (Not to mention her tenure as a co-president of the AAUW Washington (DC) Branch.)
IF2007-08_Ngumbi_Esther crop
Esther Ngumbi has built a brilliant career on the connection between bugs and women’s welfare. As the majority of the global agricultural labor force, women are exposed daily to pesticides, and Ngumbi has been researching environmentally sound solutions to pesticides. A 2007–08 AAUW International Fellow, Ngumbi has gone on to work with us at AAUW national convention, the Clinton Global Initiative University, and even modeled the cover of our celebrated Why So Few? report. She certainly didn’t lose touch after her fellowship ended — and we’re lucky she didn’t.
