Thanks to the immense pressure exerted by millions of Americans, AAUW and other organizations, and certain Senators, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is backing down from its decision to cut grants to Planned Parenthood. If one or both of your senators were among those who signed a letter to Komen's founder urging reinstatement of the grants for Planned Parenthood, we encourage you to thank them.

Handling Sexual Harrassment at School: Are They Doing Enough?

Around the time the news was covering sexual harassment allegations against then-candidate Herman Cain, a lesser-known but important report was published by the American Association of University Women (AAUW). "Our report showed how sexual harassment doesn't just happen in the workplace, but it's also happening in our nation's middle and high schools," says co-author and AAUW program manager Holly Kearl.

AAUW Cancels Service Learning Event with Susan G. Komen Foundation

AAUW is disappointed with the Susan G. Komen Foundation's decision to strip funding for cancer screenings from Planned Parenthood. As a result, AAUW will not offer the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure as an optional pre-conference community service opportunity at the upcoming National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL). NCCWSL is an annual leadership event, now in its 27th year, attended by hundreds of college women from across the nation.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) today released Crossing the Line: Sexual Harassment at School, the most comprehensive, nationally representative research conducted in the past 10 years on sexual harassment in middle and high schools. Nearly half of those surveyed reported that they had been harassed in the 2010–11 school year. Of that number, a majority (87 percent) said that being harassed had a negative effect on them.

Speak up for Fair Pay!

The Department of Labor is currently considering creating a new compensation data tool that would make it easier to enforce laws that prohibit pay discrimination. Since 2006, the federal government has had NO tool to effectively monitor wage discrimination based on race, national origin and gender by private employers. This means that our tax dollars could possibly be going to federal contractors who are not paying women fairly. That's unacceptable, and if you raise your voice, this sort of discrimination can be stopped.

This is a victory for both women and common sense. It's also a big win for economic sense. For every dollar we invest in helping women avoid unwanted pregnancies, the country saves nearly $4 in Medicaid expenditures down the road. The new guidelines also reflect the fact that prevention can be the best medicine of all and will ensure that women get the basic health care that they need.
