AAUW Mission & Action — December 2013
A Message from President Patricia Fae Ho
My first six months as your national president have renewed my appreciation for the sheer volume of the important work that goes on in our branches and states, among our national members, on our college/university partner member campuses, as well as in Washington, D.C. As this remarkable year comes to a close, I want to thank you on behalf of our national board for all you do to support women and girls. Read the rest of Patricia’s message online.
Your Gift Empowers Women and Girls
As you decide which charities to support in this season of giving, remember you can empower women and girls by giving a tax-deductible donation to AAUW. Why not make this gift in honor or in memory of someone who’s had an impact on your life and send a personalized digital card? Make your year-end gift to AAUW today!
Hour of Code Numbers Show AAUW’s Commitment to STEM
Last week the AAUW community came together to help change the face of STEM through Computer Science Education Week and the Hour of Code. The results were amazing: 375 people signed a petition, and 17 states and branches convinced leaders to proclaim Computer Science Education Week in their communities. Best of all, AAUW held 25 Hour of Code events around the country.
AAUW Weighs In on Status of American Women
In 1962, AAUW helped the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women craft a report on issues facing American women. Fifty years later, through your support, AAUW is contributing research on the status of women and joining with the U.S. Department of Labor to celebrate the anniversary of the report’s release. Join us in the fight to achieve equity for women.
National Women’s History Museum: Update
The House Administration Committee held a hearing this month on the future of the National Women’s History Museum, a cause AAUW members have long supported. The committee will consider, perhaps as early as January, a bipartisan bill that would appoint a commission to explore the museum’s financial and logistical prospects.
Support the FAMILY Act
Introduced in Congress last week, the FAMILY Act would provide paid leave for Americans with serious health issues in their families. As champions of the women’s economic agenda, AAUW members promote equal pay for equal work, work and family balance, and affordable child care. Contact your members of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor this important bill.
AAUW Testifies on Women in STEM Workforce
The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce Manufacturing and Trade invited AAUW to testify at a hearing on the future STEM workforce. You can read our testimony and watch AAUW Director of Research Catherine Hill testify at the hearing. Your support helps us keep the pressure on legislators to increase access to computer science classes for our children.
AAUW Co-sponsors Briefing on Immigration Reform
On November 19, AAUW co-sponsored a Capitol Hill briefing about the abuse and exploitation of undocumented immigrants. Now is the time to enact immigration reform to provide the just and humane relief these immigrants deserve. Take action by sending a message to your representatives.
AAUW ON CAMPUS
Your Support Makes NCCWSL Better Every Year!
In 2013 more than 700 attendees learned how to stand out from the crowd by joining us at the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders. You make this outstanding leadership event possible. Thank you for your continued support of the scholarship fund and general fund to ensure that NCCWSL 2014 will be even bigger and better.
More Women Lead on Campus Thanks to Elect Her
This year Elect Her helped more women than ever win top positions in student government. Even those who didn’t run were inspired to consider it in the future, like Jhazi from Howard University. We look forward to expanding our reach in 2014 with your support.

Building a Better Future for Women and Girls
A member wrote to say that the 2013 annual report “is a clear explanation of what AAUW is doing and how members can help.” Have you read your copy? What do you think? A digital copy of the annual report is also available on the AAUW website, so you can share it with friends considering their end-of-year giving as well!
