Voices of a Generation: Teenage Girls on Sex, School, and Self (1999)

What are the biggest problems for teen girls today? Let them tell you. The AAUW's Educational Foundation's report Voices of a Generation: Teenage Girls on Sex, School, and Self (1999) presents the often-riveting replies of more than 2,000 girls who took part in AAUW’s national Sister-to-Sister Summits in 1997 and 1998.

The Voices of a Generation database was made up of 11- through 17-year-olds girls’ responses to six questions on the summit application form. The questions asked girls to describe the major issues in their lives, tell how schools could help, and spell out what advice they’d like to give and take from other girls. Responses, gathered from diverse places combine an intimate portrait of girls’ lives with analytic insights and original research by Pamela Haag, then Foundation acting research director.

Voices also contains girls’ suggestions for action by their communities, parents, and schools that they think would make a difference in their lives. Their recommendations may surprise you.
