Under the Microscope: A Decade of Gender Equity Projects in the Sciences (2004)

The American Association of University Women Educational Foundation and the National Science Foundation are among the top supporters of gender equity projects in the sciences. In the last 10 years alone, these two foundations have invested nearly $90 million to fund hundreds of projects aimed at increasing the participation of girls and women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Under the Microscope takes a close look at this body of projects and reveals significant trends in the development and support of gender equity projects over the past decade.  It also offers recommendations for strengthening the advancement of gender equity in STEM subjects.

Educators, practitioners, researchers, and funding organizations with an interest in gender equity and the sciences will find this report useful in planning, developing, and funding future STEM gender equity projects.

The research for the report was funded by a National Science Foundation grant and conducted by Yasmin Kafai and a team of researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles.
