Gender Gaps: Where Schools Still Fail Our Children by the AAUW Educational Foundation documents the progress and failure of schools in providing a fair and equitable education since 1992. That year the Foundation published
How Schools Shortchange Girls, which propelled gender equity to the forefront of the education reform debate. The new report focuses on emerging gaps in areas such as technology that threaten to disadvantage girls as they confront 21st-century demands.
Synthesizing 1,000 research studies, Gender Gaps reviews issues of historic concern for girls — math and science enrollment, high-stakes standardized testing, extracurricular activities, and health and development risks — and new areas such as technology and School-to-Work programs. The report finds some gains in girls' achievement, some areas where boys — not girls — lag, and some areas, like technology, where needs have not yet been addressed. Based on these findings, the Foundation offers more than 35 recommendations for action by states, local school districts, educators, and researchers in order to reach high educational achievement through gender equity.
