Dear AAUW Members:
We are excited to share our new and exciting partnership with CARE, as announced at the AAUW National Convention in Phoenix in June! This partnership strengthens AAUW's ongoing commitment to supporting global development issues.
CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. CARE places special focus on working alongside poor women, because equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty. Women are at the heart of CARE's community-based efforts to improve basic education, prevent the spread of HIV, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources. We urge you to learn more about CARE's work by visiting their website at www.care.org.
CARE and AAUW have several ways for our members to "join the movement" of global women's empowerment in the fight against poverty and unequal access to education!
Show your support of this new partnership by:
- Hosting an Education Awareness Day at your school, on your college or university campus, or in your local community. A plaid uniform is a symbol in the developing world because it indicates that a girl is in school. Make plaid your theme, and wear it as a sign that you support giving girls the right to equal access to education around the world! To learn more about CARE's work with girls' education and how you can receive a plaid scarf, please visit www.care.org.
- Joining the CARE- AAUW "Education is Powerful" Short Story Contest. Share your stories about how you were empowered through education, how it changed you, or how a "role model" changed your life through education. The best short story winner will win the chance to travel to see CARE's work in action! Details will be posted on AAUW's website in September at AAUW's International Corner.
- Supporting the Education for All Act of 2007. This bi-partisan legislation calls for the development of a comprehensive strategy to make universal primary education a priority for U.S. foreign assistance. More information and the full text of the legislation can be found on AAUW's website at AAUW's International Corner.
Thank you for your support of this new and exciting partnership between AAUW and CARE!
