About the 25th Anniversary Conference

Join us June 3–5 for the 25th anniversary of the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders!

AAUW and NASPA's Center for Scholarship, Research, and Professional Development for Women are proud to present the 2010 National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL), Leadership for Today and Tomorrow. Since its inception in 1985, this two-and-a-half-day conference has been offering women student leaders a perfect opportunity to hone their leadership skills and become empowered to implement change on campus and in their communities. Every year, the conference focuses on important and contemporary leadership issues for women, providing them with the inspiration and skills they need to succeed. For the 25th anniversary, we are excited to add special events that celebrate the conference's long-standing commitment to young women's leadership.

Skill-Building

A Morning at the Newseum: Exploring the Free Flow of Information
How do you access news? Through Facebook, Twitter, newspapers, television, websites? As women in America, we have come to rely on our ability to access information freely, quickly, and without censure. This is not the case for much of the world. This Pre-Conference session will explore the free flow of information at the highly interactive Newseum.
A chartered bus will take participants from the University of Maryland to downtown Washington DC to explore issues of censorship and information sharing. Participants will also have an opportunity to engage with the other exhibits available at the Newseum, which boasts unmatched views of the capitol skyline. (40 participants max)

A Morning on Capitol Hill: Women and Politics
This Pre-Conference session will explore the world of women and politics at the United States Capitol. Through a discussion with female Hill staffers, participants will hear about current legislative issues of the day and the staffersÂ’ own successful career paths. Participants will also have an opportunity to tour the Capitol building itself. A chartered bus will take participants from the University of Maryland to downtown Washington DC. (40 participant limit)

Community Service

Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure

Komen Race for the Cure, the organization has become the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world. The participants will help the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure organizers with late registration, event set-up, and kit pick up. (40 participant limit)

Mount Carmel House
The Mt. Carmel House provides transitional and outreach services for homeless women living in the District of Columbia. Participants will help with painting, rearranging furniture, cleaning the facilities, and working on a gardening project with the women residents. (20 participant limit)

Dress Code

The recommended dress code for the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders is business casual. For all general conference sessions, you do not have to dress up in a formal dress or high heels. Consider nice pants, blouses, a suit, dress, or skirt for each day of the conference. Jeans, however, are not business casual attire. Wear comfortable dress shoes such as low heels, boots, or flats that you can walk in for a full day. For accessories, keep it simple.

For the Women of Distinction Awards Ceremony and reception, please dress more formally; wear a full suit, dress, or skirt. This is a special evening, and participants will be meeting and networking with the Women of Distinction.

If you are participating in any of the community service events, dress comfortably and casually.

The Washington, D.C., area can be very warm and humid on summer days. It can, however, also get chilly at night. Please consider the weather forecast when planning your wardrobe.

We look forward to your attendance at this special 25th anniversary conference. Please contact us by e-mail at nccwsl@aauw.org or by phone at 800/326-2289 if you have any questions.
