Marsha Guenzler-Stevens to Be Honored at College Leadership Conference
University of Maryland Student Union Director Named a Woman of Distinction
WASHINGTON — Marsha Guenzler-Stevens, who serves as the director of the Adele H. Stamp Student Union at the University of Maryland, College Park, will receive a Women of Distinction Award at a ceremony on Thursday, June 2 during AAUW and NASPA's 26th annual National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL). She will also lead the conference's opening session, Finding Your Voice.
Guenzler-Stevens earned this honor by establishing herself as a leader on and off campus throughout her career. In 1995, she was named one of the University of Maryland's Women of Influence. In 1999, she was recognized with the Outstanding Staff Award for her work in advancing the diversity initiative on campus. In 2004, the University System of Maryland Board of Regents gave the staff award for extraordinary public service to the university and the greater community. In March 2007, she received the William L. Thomas Jr. Mentoring Award for her work advising graduate students at the university, and in March 2009 she was named Woman of the Year at the University of Maryland.
AAUW and NASPA are proud to recognize Guenzler-Stevens as a 2011 Women of Distinction Award winner for her leadership in academia and beyond. Presented annually at NCCWSL, the Women of Distinction Awards honor women leaders who have made extraordinary accomplishments in their professions or their communities and who represent inspiring role models for women student leaders. Guenzler-Stevens will be honored alongside an esteemed group of women:
- Connie Chung, Emmy-winning television news journalist
- Swanee Hunt, former ambassador, Harvard University's Eleanor Roosevelt lecturer in public policy, and Hunt Alternatives Fund president
- Lisa Jackson, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency administrator
- Natalie Randolph, Calvin Coolidge Senior High School varsity football head coach
This year's awardees join a prestigious group of more than 100 women who have been honored since the award was established in 1985. Past awardees include playwright, performer, and activist Eve Ensler; Rep. Linda Sánchez (D-CA); radio personality Diane Rehm; and Olympic gold medalist Dominique Dawes.
The 2011 NCCWSL Women of Distinction Awards Ceremony at the University of Maryland, College Park will be held from 7:30–9:30 p.m. and is supported by the Barbara Fetterhoff Honorary Fund. A full listing of NCCWSL supporters and a conference schedule are available on www.nccwsl.org.
