AAUW Welcomes New Chief of Marketing and Communications
Cynthia Miller to Lead AAUW's Marketing, Communications, and Publications Functions
WASHINGTON – The American Association of University Women (AAUW) has announced the hiring of Cynthia Miller as its new chief of marketing and communications. Miller will integrate and enhance marketing and communications strategies to advance AAUW's mission and magnify the organization's profile nationally and internationally.
An executive with extensive experience in strategic communications, marketing, and media production, Miller has held senior leadership positions with both Marriott International and Walt Disney World. She later founded Miller.Omni.Media, a Frederick, Maryland-based company that provides strategic communication and marketing services to Fortune 100 companies.
"Cynthia brings the right mix of knowledge, talent, and know-how to the post and shares AAUW's commitment to opening doors for women and girls," said AAUW Executive Director Linda D. Hallman, CAE. "While we have made great gains, there is still much work to do to create a world in which all women and their contributions are valued. Our new chief will help deliver this message more broadly to showcase AAUW's efforts to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research."

Miller joins the executive management team during an important time. AAUW has a number of new initiatives planned for the next year as it works to invest in its future and to position itself strategically to expand its identity as the leading organization for advocates of women's equity. In addition to preparing for its 130th birthday celebration in June at the national convention in Washington, D.C., AAUW continues to be a go-to resource on the timely topic of engaging women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). AAUW's 2010 research report, Why So Few? Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, pointed to environmental and social barriers that block women's participation in STEM, an area in which Miller has a strong interest. In the next six months AAUW will issue additional reports that continue its leadership in this critical area.
Miller currently serves as the communications chair of the Aeronautics Industry Association/National Defense Industrial Association's STEM Education Workforce. In that capacity, she authors a monthly column, "STEM News," featured in National Defense magazine. She also serves on the communications and public relations subcommittee of the Business and Industry STEM Education Coalition.
Miller holds a bachelor's degree in English and art from Towson State University and a master's degree in business administration from Mount Saint Mary's College. She serves on the board of directors of the Washington, D.C., Chapter of Women in Film and Video and is a member of AAUW as well as the Southern Frederick County Rotary Club.
