AAUW Research Report Coming Soon!
AAUW will complete a new research report on women and girls in math, science, technology, and engineering in time for presentation at state conventions. The report and presentation materials will be available in March 2010. Limited funds are available from our National Science Foundation grant to send staff and reports to state conventions or other AAUW events. Please contact Christi Corbett for more information.

Nominating Committee Members Needed
Applications are now being accepted for members of the AAUW Nominating Committee, who will develop a slate of candidates to serve on the AAUW Board of Directors for the 2011–13 term. The application notice is posted on the AAUW website, along with a description of the qualifications for appointment and an application form. Nominating Committee members will be announced by January 31, 2010.

End-of-Year Philanthropy
Many generous members remember AAUW as one of their philanthropic priorities near the end of the year. If you are considering a tax-deductible donation to your favorite AAUW program, please donate online or contact us at 202/785-7766 or development@aauw.org. Thank you for your support!

AAUW 2010 Art Contest
Attention AAUW artists! Last year more than 200 members participated in our art contest, and the winning entries were featured on the spring AAUW note cards. Starting on January 8, you can submit your art and photography for this year's contest. Winning entries will be featured in a calendar that will be sent to members this summer and on new note cards available at ShopAAUW. Visit the AAUW website for more details.

AAUW Programs
AAUW still delivers all your favorite programs, including those of the Legal Advocacy Fund, the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund, and all our fellowships and grants. A description and a diagram of our programs and funds are available on our website, along with answers to frequently asked questions. For more information, or to invite a staff member to do a presentation on AAUW programs at your convention, please contact development@aauw.org.

Join the Dialog
Have you visited AAUW Dialog lately? If not, you missed a series of blog posts on The Shriver Report — A Woman's Nation Changes Everything. AAUW members Kathy Braeman, Elizabeth Kristen, Marcy Leverenz, and former LAF plaintiff Linda Brodsky, M.D., who recently became a regular contributor, joined the dialog with guest blog posts. Our audience continues to grow, but we are still missing your voice in the conversation. Visit AAUW Dialog online or subscribe to have new blog posts e-mailed directly to you.

Resources on Title IX Compliance in High School Athletics
LAF's new program Title IX Compliance: Know the Score makes a great branch activity or a group project for AAUW members and their friends. If you missed the October webinar about the new Program in a Box, you can download it from the AAUW website and view it at any time or share it at a branch meeting. Contact laf@aauw.org if you have questions, plan to use the Program in a Box, or would like to have a workshop on this topic at your 2010 state convention.

Close the Wage Gap with $tart $mart
$tart $mart Salary Negotiation Workshops empower women college students to negotiate fair and equitable salaries after graduation. More than 200 facilitators, mostly AAUW members, were trained this summer to spread this workshop nationwide. Keep the momentum going and be trained as a facilitator and/or promote $tart $mart workshops by filling out an online registration form. Questions? E-mail leadership@aauw.org.

AAUW Campus-Based Programs
During the current academic year, 10 college student leaders are serving on AAUW's national Student Advisory Council, advising AAUW on issues of importance to students and helping lead the 2010 National Conference for College Women Student Leaders. This spring, 10 campuses will host Campaign College, the only program in the country that trains women to run for student government. A record 12 campuses will use Campus Action Project grants to hold initiatives focused on breaking through the barriers girls and women face in entering and staying in science, math, and technology fields. Special thanks goes to the Mary Ann Ahrens – Iowa Giving Circle for providing substantial support for the 2008–09 and 2009–10 Campus Action Projects. You can donate to the giving circle online.

Fellowships, Grants, and Local Scholarships

Fellowships and Grants Deadlines
AAUW fellowships are always in great demand and need your continued financial support! Fellowship and grant applications are already being submitted, and eligible candidate numbers are even higher than last year. The deadline for Career Development Grants is December 15. The complete list of deadlines is available on the AAUW website. Don't forget to share information about the new AAUW Local Scholarship Clearinghouse with deserving young women in your network.

Public Policy Updates

Members Support Unemployment Insurance Extension
AAUW Action Network members sent thousands of messages to their senators in support of the extension of unemployment insurance. This legislation was signed into law by President Obama on November 6, extending unemployment insurance benefits to workers in all states and helping millions of American families facing financial hardship.

AAUW, NCWGE Hold Congressional Briefing
The National Coalition for Women and Girls in Education, chaired by AAUW, held a congressional briefing on Capitol Hill for a full house. The briefing focused on math, science, technology, and engineering education, the effects of gender bias in school on students and U.S. competitiveness, and actions that can be taken to address sex discrimination in education and increase women's participation in these fields.

AAUW Celebrates Enactment of Hate Crimes Prevention Legislation
AAUW members worked hard for more than a decade in support of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, signed into law by President Obama on October 28. AAUW led the efforts of women's organizations to pass the bill, and AAUW Executive Director Linda Hallman, AAUW Director of Public Policy and Government Relations Lisa Maatz, and AAUW Government Relations Coordinator Anne Hedgepeth attended a White House event celebrating the law's enactment.

Hallman Speaks at NSF
AAUW Executive Director Linda Hallman spoke about the ways in which AAUW promotes and strengthens math and science education for women and girls in a presentation before the National Science Foundation's Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering on October 26. Hallman provided an overview of AAUW's comprehensive approach, which includes distribution of fellowships and grants, publication of research findings, and the pursuit of new public policy.

Policy Recommendations Provided for A Woman's Nation Report
AAUW took the lead in releasing policy recommendations for The Shriver Report — A Woman's Nation Changes Everything. The report, from Maria Shriver and the Center for American Progress, was co-edited by a former AAUW fellow and senior economist for the center, Heather Boushey. Read AAUW's recommendations on topics including pay equity, work-life balance, and education, and use our Program in a Box to see how you can turn the recommendations into action with your branch or community.

Members Active in Passage of National Women's History Museum Act
AAUW Action Network members were vocal in their support of the National Women's History Museum Act of 2009 (H.R. 1700), which passed the House of Representatives on October 14. The bill would permit the National Women's History Museum to purchase land near the National Mall for a museum in appreciation of women's many accomplishments and contributions to our nation. AAUW is a strong supporter of H.R. 1700 and a proud member of the NWHM Coalition.

These position papers and issue pages offer the freshest information, advocacy resources, and most effective avenues for action on issues related to our current public policy priorities.
