AAUW Receives National Science Foundation Grant
The National Science Foundation awarded AAUW a two-year grant to research, write, and disseminate a report on recent key findings on girls and women in science, technology, engineering, and math. We are proud of this second NSF STEM grant, and the AAUW Research Department is excited to get to work on this new project!

2009 AAUW National Convention: Breaking through Barriers
The 2009 AAUW Convention, to be held June 26–28, 2009, at the Renaissance Grand and Suites Hotel in St. Louis, will be a historic and exciting event. Details on registration, program activities, travel planning, sponsorship opportunities, and St. Louis tourism will be available on our convention website.

 

AAUW Educational Foundation 50th Anniversary
The Honor Roll of Donors, which lists contributors who have joined AAUW's celebration of the Educational Foundation's 50th anniversary, is now live! To join this list, please make your contribution online or by check to AAUW EF 50th Anniversary, 1111 Sixteenth Street N.W., Washington, DC 20036. This fundraising campaign ends on October 15, 2008, so act now!

 

Where's the Girl Power?
AAUW Executive Director Linda D. Hallman, CAE, was part of a discussion that aired September 10 on Minnesota Public Radio, titled "Where's the Girl Power?" She joined a panel that tackled the question of why success in school is not a predictor of success in the workplace for women and discussed AAUW's report Behind the Pay Gap.

AAUW Student Advisory Council Announced
Meet the new SAC members for 2008–09! Members of AAUW's prestigious Student Advisory Council talk to AAUW staff monthly about the needs of college students and ideas for fighting sex discrimination through campus outreach projects. Learn more about them and their role on the AAUW website.

 

Call for Campus Action Project Applications
AAUW invites campus-based teams of students, faculty, and/or administrators from U.S. colleges and universities to submit proposals for Campus Action Project grant projects by November 7, 2008, on the topic Where the Girls Are: Promoting Equity for All Women and Girls. Download the CAP Program in a Box to learn how your branch can become involved. This year's grants are sponsored by the Mary Ann Aherns giving circle in honor of Mary Ann's leadership at the national, regional, and local levels.

 

New Resources for Girls and Women in STEM on AAUW Website
Visit the National Girls Collaborative Project's page on the AAUW website to see some new resources for girls and women in science, technology, engineering, and math fields. Find information on how to evaluate your branch's STEM programs, a video about AAUW of California's Tech Trek Science Camp for Girls, and tips on how to talk to girls about STEM fields.

The AAUW Directory of Fellowship and Grant Recipients highlights the outstanding recipients of AAUW's five fellowship and grant programs — 269 individuals who will receive $4.5 million in funding for the current academic year.

AAUW's Global Connections

AAUW Attains Special U.N. Status
Expect AAUW to take an even more active role in global affairs now that we have special consultative status with the United Nations' Economic and Social Council, which promotes respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. AAUW can now participate in international conferences, sign on to NGO statements, and share our expertise. AAUW-CARE Short-Story Contest Winner
AAUW members from all over participated in the CARE-AAUW "Education Is Powerful" essay contest, launched last fall, to share stories about how they were empowered by education or inspired by a role model to pursue education. The winning essay was contributed by Arlene Mandell, a retired English professor and a member of the AAUW Santa Rosa (CA) Branch. Congratulations to Arlene, who has won the opportunity to travel abroad to see CARE's work firsthand! Read her winning essay here.

Public Policy Updates

AAUW at the Conventions
AAUW Director of Public Policy and Government Relations Lisa Maatz attended both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions along with several AAUW members. AAUW cosponsored events with the White House Project at both conventions and ensured that a mighty AAUW presence was felt by both parties. Lisa also offered an insider's point of view on all the day-to-day events in Denver and St. Paul with daily entries on AAUW Dialog.

 

AAUW Gets Out the Vote
As part of our Voter Education Campaign, AAUW recently released the Congressional Voting Record for the 110th Congress, which confirmed that this Congress was noticeably more supportive of AAUW's positions in the areas of education, economic security, and civil rights. Voter guides for the upcoming presidential elections and key congressional races are also available, and branches are encouraged to create voter guides for local races and to share those guides with us for posting on the AAUW website.

 

Celebrate AAUW's Victory on the Paycheck Fairness Act
AAUW celebrated a victory with the passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act in the House of Representatives on July 31. Visit AAUW's website to read the in-depth story of the bill's passage and our instrumental role in this victory. See how your representative voted on the Paycheck Fairness Act, and contact your representative about his or her vote.
