AAUW Attends White House STEM Event
AAUW President Carolyn Garfein and Executive Director Linda D. Hallman visited the White House in September for the announcement of a new National Science Foundation initiative to promote workplace flexibility in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. AAUW was recognized for our contributions to research and grassroots advocacy in promoting women’s increased participation in STEM.

Have You Completed Your Leadership Development Survey?
The AAUW Board of Directors created a brief online survey to help expand our leadership programs in ways that will most benefit our members. Please complete it now — the survey ends this Friday, October 21. Your responses are anonymous and will help establish our priorities for leadership program growth.

Coming Soon — New AAUW Research Report
AAUW’s new research report, Crossing the Line: Sexual Harassment at School, will be released in November. Based on findings from a national survey conducted this spring, the report presents the most comprehensive research to date on sexual harassment in grades 7–12 and reveals some sobering statistics about the prevalence of sexual harassment and the negative effects it has on students’ education.

AAUW Celebrates 130 Years on November 28
November is National AAUW Month! In honor of our anniversary, we invite all branches to host a Cocktails and Convos happy hour event on Tuesday, November 8 — approximately one year before the 2012 presidential elections. The focus of the evening will be the AAUW Action Fund’s new My Vote campaign and registering young women to vote.

Board Votes to Disburse $33,000 to Ongoing LAF Cases
In late September, the AAUW Board of Directors voted to contribute a total of $33,000 to seven ongoing AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund cases based on their current needs. Read the details of the cases on the AAUW website.

AAUW Works for Working Mothers
AAUW staff members are attending Working Mother Media’s Work Life Congress in New York City, October 18–20. At the event, experts from the 100 Best Companies will share best practices for employers. AAUW will be focusing attention on the work we do for American women through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.

Lisa Maatz Honored by Women’s Chamber of Commerce
At its 10th anniversary event, the U.S. Women’s Chamber of Commerce honored AAUW Public Policy and Government Relations Director Lisa Maatz. She received the prestigious Trailblazer award in recognition of her work on behalf of women and girls. Read the full list of awardees.

AAUW in the News
AAUW Senior Researcher Christianne Corbett was quoted in a Washington Post column focused on the gender imbalance in STEM fields. Corbett argued that bolstering women’s representation in those fields can boost our country’s economy and competitiveness.

Elect Her–Campus Women Win Sites Announced!
AAUW and Running Start will be training college women to run for student government at 30 campuses in 2012! The five-hour Elect Her trainings provide students with research and information about women and politics, inspiring local speakers, and interactive campaign exercises. AAUW is accepting applications for the AAUW Nominating Committee, which is responsible for evaluating and selecting a highly qualified slate of candidates for elected and appointed positions on the 2013–15 AAUW Board of Directors. Fellows and Grantees Gather at AAUW Luncheon
This month, AAUW hosted a luncheon for current and past fellowship and grant recipients and current panelists. Attendees connected with other fellows and grantees, met staff, and heard about AAUW initiatives. Staff members gave a presentation on the importance of sponsors, telling the stories of the remarkable women who have funded AAUW fellowships.
