AAUW at Work on Pay Equity

AAUW Launches "I Am the Face of Pay Equity" Campaign
In preparation for Equal Pay Day on Tuesday, April 22, AAUW recently launched the "I Am the Face of Pay Equity" campaign. Signs and stickers are available for use at AAUW events by contacting the public policy department. Visit AAUW's Pay Equity web page for ideas, tips, e-cards, and resources to use in your community on Equal Pay Day and throughout the year. Show your senators the faces of pay equity. Add your face to the gallery today.

Support Equal Pay Legislation
As AAUW branches across the country engage in a variety of activities to promote pay equity on Equal Pay Day, community leaders can also educate and unite their communities in support of the Fair Pay Restoration Act
(S. 1843),
which addresses the U.S. Supreme Court's recent, wrongheaded decision in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. You can urge your senators to support the Fair Pay Restoration Act through AAUW's Two-Minute Activist. With the exciting prospect of this bill moving through Congress, all AAUW members must do their part to promote it.

AAUW Campus Action Projects Spread Pay Equity Message
AAUW selected seven teams from universities around the country to receive Campus Action Project (CAP) grants. The awardees are implementing projects based on the recommendations in Behind the Pay Gap for promoting pay equity. For Equal Pay Day 2008, students at Alfred University in New York will premiere their short film, Dreams to Reality, a student-produced and directed documentary highlighting the financial hopes and realities of recent AU alumni. The film is a powerful tool for research, publicity, and education about pay equity. Three of the CAP team advisers are members of the AAUW Alfred-Hornell (NY) Branch.

The CAP team from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, will mark Equal Pay Day with a keynote address by Martha West, a nationally known scholar on employment and sex-based discrimination. The CAP project leader, Kayt Sunwood, is a member of the AAUW Fairbanks (AK) Branch.

LAF Update

LAF Conducts Campus Outreach on Sexual Harassment
In March, AAUW Executive Director Linda Hallman and AAUW Director of Public Policy and Governmental Relations Lisa Maatz traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, to participate in Legal Advocacy Fund campus outreach programs based on AAUW's 2006 research report Drawing the Line: Sexual Harassment on Campus. At the University of Missouri, St. Louis (USML), Maatz moderated a panel on sexual harassment on campus, and Maatz and Hallman together moderated a roundtable discussion on strategies, resources, and best practices for dealing with harassment on campus. At the AAUW Metro St. Louis Interbranch Council's Spring Fling Luncheon, Hallman gave the keynote speech, Maatz spoke about related public policy advocacy issues, and UMSL students performed a skit about sexual harassment.

AAUW at Work on Voter Education

AAUW Gears Up for the 2008 Elections
Because the 2008 elections may be among the most important contests in recent history, many AAUW state conventions are focusing on voter education and turnout. AAUW's recently revised Woman-to-Woman Voter Turnout: A Manual for Community-Based Campaigns to Mobilize Women to Vote, 2nd Edition offers tips on helping more women get to the polls and provides sample voter guides, a PowerPoint presentation, and many other resources for download. Learn how you can make a difference throughout this election year with AAUW's voter education campaign. You can also find out how your members of Congress voted on issues important to women and girls by reading the AAUW Congressional Voting Record for the 110th Congress, First Session. Help AAUW bring attention to issues that are important to women and girls!

States and Branches in Action

Rally for Pay Equity at the Pennsylvania State House
AAUW of Pennsylvania members and members of other women's organizations will rally for pay equity on April 18 at their state capitol building. To obtain signs and stickers for your branch, e-mail AAUW's public policy department.

AAUW of Connecticut Commemorates Equal Pay Day
AAUW of Connecticut is collaborating with the Connecticut Permanent Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW) and other organizations to commemorate Equal Pay Day. On April 22, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT); Susan Hoover, AAUW of Connecticut's women's issues chair and coordinator of the CT WAGE Hub; and Carol Virostek, AAUW of Connecticut president, will speak at a news conference at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. The theme for AAUW of Connecticut's convention, which will be held later that week, will be Getting Even: Women, the Workplace, and the Pay Gap.

AAUW Notes

Student Leadership Conference Early-Bird Registration Ends April 18
AAUW is proud to partner with NASPA to host the 2008 National Conference for College Women Student Leaders, June 5–7, at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. This conference allows young women to gain leadership skills while participating in dynamic workshops and taking advantage of networking opportunities. Featured speakers include Pamela Stone, a professor at Hunter College in New York City.

Several inspiring women, including award-winning journalist Kimberly Dozier and activist and MacArthur Foundation "genius grant" recipient Majora Carter, will be honored as Women of Distinction. This year, attendees will have the chance to engage in community service activities and to participate in a preconference forum on young women in the 2008 election.

Support younger women's leadership and spread the word about this conference in your community. Together we will empower young women for leadership today and tomorrow!

2008 Marks the 20th Anniversary of the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund!
Twenty years ago, AAUW members created the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund so that AAUW could research and take action on important issues that affect women and girls. The resulting research, How Schools Shortchange Girls, exposed unintended bias against girls in the classroom and its negative effect on their academic achievement. With that report, AAUW created a national dialogue and recommended actions to stop practices that discriminate against our daughters. Did AAUW make a difference with that report? Absolutely! Because of our research and action, girls are doing better in school.

Please join us as we celebrate 20 years of research for women and girls by being a proud supporter of the Eleanor Roosevelt Fund. For your gift of $100 or more, you will receive our 2008 Eleanor Roosevelt Fund pin. For a gift of $200 or more, we'll send you both the 2008 pin and the 20th anniversary pin.

2009 AAUW National Convention — June 26–28, 2009
Mark your calendars now. The 2009 national convention will have a new format and many new features. Our convention hotel is the Renaissance St. Louis Grand and Suites Hotel. We'll meet you in St. Louis!

New AAUW Public Service Ads
AAUW is proud to make public service announcement (PSA) materials available to help members spread our mission. The ads highlight a selection of diverse members from the AAUW Mission Video and their belief in the importance of AAUW. PSAs can be downloaded as PDFs and localized with AAUW state/branch name, phone number, and website address information. Members can use these materials to seek donated ad space in local and community newspapers or to create mini-billboards for table-top display at events.

Show You Care With an AAUW E-Card
Nothing says "I support AAUW's mission" like an AAUW e-card. Send cards to raise awareness about pay equity, to invite a friend or colleague to join AAUW, or to get out the vote.

Read Any Good Books Lately?
If so, let us know. AAUW is currently accepting suggestions for books to include in the 2008–09 ¡Adelante! Book of the Month Club. Our website offers criteria and instructions for recommending a book for next year's list.
