Convention News

Delegates Approve Amended Bylaws
The delegates to the 2009 AAUW National Convention in St. Louis approved the AAUW Bylaws but struck a proposal that would have opened membership to all who support AAUW's mission. The delegates voted instead to insert passages from the 2007 Association Bylaws that extend membership to individuals on the basis of their educational degrees. The delegates also passed the "one member, one vote" proposal, which provides every member the right and opportunity to have a personal voice in directing the future of AAUW, and approved the bylaws of the AAUW Action Fund, which supports and advocates for legislation, policies, and procedures related to women's equity and education. The new AAUW Bylaws and the Action Fund Bylaws will be available on the AAUW website shortly.

In other business, the delegates passed motions to increase the number of directors-at-large from seven to 10, while the number of appointed officers and directors dropped from six to three under the new bylaws, which went into effect on July 1, 2009. The amended board composition will go into effect for the 2011–13 biennium.

New AAUW Board of Directors
The following officers were installed for the two-year term beginning July 1, 2009:

AAUW President: Carolyn H. Garfein
AAUW Vice President: Gail Nordmoe
AAUW Finance Vice President: Mildred Hoffler-Foushee
AAUW Secretary: Jacqueline Littleton
Directors-at-Large: Kathy Anthon, Marcia Capriotti, Kathleen Cha, Alicia Hetman, Connie Hildebrand, Patricia Ho, David Kirkwood, Betsy McDowell, Linda Tozier, Krys Wulff

2009 AAUW National Convention Highlights
More than 900 members attended the 2009 AAUW National Convention in St. Louis. Visit the convention website to view pictures, videos, workshop presentations, press features, and blog postings. You can also download the Convention Today newsletter to read articles about convention events and speakers, including Lilly Ledbetter, Rep. Rosa DeLauro, Rep. Jackie Speier, and others.

AAUW Convention Attendees Take Action
AAUW convention attendees took up a special call to action from St. Louis and filled the voice mailboxes of the 68 senators who have not yet co-sponsored the Paycheck Fairness Act (S. 182), while other members joined in the action from home. Even though the convention weekend has passed, you can still call your senators' D.C. offices today and urge them to cosponsor this critical legislation.

Campus Connections

Call for Campus Action Project Applications
AAUW invites campus-based teams of students, faculty, and/or administrators from U.S. colleges and universities to submit a proposal for a Campus Action Project (CAP) grant by October 16, 2009, on the topic "Breaking through Barriers in STEM for Women and Girls." Applications will be available at the end of August. Download the CAP Program in a Box to learn how your branch can become involved.

Join the AAUW Student Advisory Council
Starting at the end of August, college students can apply to serve on AAUW's prestigious Student Advisory Council (SAC) for 2009–10. SAC members provide essential firsthand accounts of college student needs and ideas for combating sex discrimination to AAUW staff through monthly conference calls, and they serve as leaders at the annual National Conference for College Women Student Leaders.

Apply for Funding for Campus Outreach Programs
Apply on a rolling basis for grant money to hold a sex discrimination-focused event at a local college or university. Visit the LAF Campus Outreach web page for more information.

$tart $mart Workshop Training Opportunity
AAUW and the WAGE Project have formed a partnership focused on ensuring that women learn about negotiating equitable pay before they graduate from college. Through this partnership, AAUW and the WAGE Project will offer $tart $mart Campus Negotiation Workshops on college campuses. If you are interested in becoming a facilitator, sponsoring a facilitator training session for yourself and other AAUW members, or recruiting campuses for these workshops, please fill out a registration form online.

Legal Advocacy Fund

LAF Amicus Brief Updates
In June, AAUW signed new amicus briefs to support plaintiffs in two different workplace sexual harassment cases, Harris v. Mayor and City Council of Baltimore City and Reeves v. C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Inc. Also in June, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling in Ricci v. DeStefano. AAUW had signed an amicus brief in this nationally significant case in support of the position of the city of New Haven, Connecticut, and the steps it took to ensure workplace fairness, a position that was ultimately rejected by the court.

LAF Plaintiff Travel Grant Deadline
Would you like an LAF-supported plaintiff to speak at your state or regional convention next spring? AAUW invites you to submit an application by October 15, 2009, for a Plaintiff Travel Grant (PTG). Download the PTG Program in a Box for more information.

Public Policy News

2009–11 AAUW Public Policy Program Online
The 2009–11 AAUW Public Policy Program, which was adopted at the AAUW National Convention in June, can now be viewed online. The Public Policy Program establishes the federal action priorities on which AAUW members across the country focus their advocacy efforts and guides the work of the national staff.

Legislation on Student Loan Benefits Takes Effect
New benefits associated with the AAUW-supported College Cost Reduction and Access Act went into effect on July 1. The new benefits include lower interest rates on federal loans, higher Pell Grant scholarships, and a new Income-Based Repayment (IBR) program. Learn more about the new IBR program and contact your representative and urge her or him to support H.R. 2492, which would prevent the taxation of federal student loan debt forgiven through the IBR program and make the ideals behind loan forgiveness a reality.

AAUW Testifies to STEM Committee
AAUW recently testified before the National Science Foundation's Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering. AAUW believes that the lack of women and girls in STEM has significant implications for women's economic security as well as the overall economy and America's global competitiveness, and we continue to work to level the playing field in this area.

AAUW Submits Questions for Supreme Court Nomination Hearings
AAUW submitted questions from our AAUW Action Network members to the Senate Judiciary Committee in advance of Judge Sonia Sotomayor's Supreme Court confirmation hearings. AAUW members also held watch parties across the nation and joined in with our live blogging of the hearings.

Title IX Anniversary Celebrated
June 23 marked the 37th anniversary of Title IX, the federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded educational programs. AAUW co-hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill to discuss the need for legislation to require high schools to report gender equity data. AAUW supports the High School Sports Information Collection Act (S. 471) and the High School Athletics Accountability Act (H.R. 2882), which would help communities better enforce Title IX by making public the expenditures for high school athletic programs and the participation rates of female and male students.

AAUW Marks Equal Pay Act Anniversary
On June 10, AAUW marked the 46th anniversary of the enactment of the Equal Pay Act. On this anniversary, thousands of AAUW Action Network members sent e-cards to friends and family and urged their senators to quickly pass the Paycheck Fairness Act (S.182). This first-ever and much-needed update to the Equal Pay Act will take meaningful steps to create incentives for employers to follow the law, empower women to negotiate for equal pay, and strengthen federal outreach and enforcement efforts.

Equal Pay Day Set for 2010
The next Equal Pay Day, the date that symbolizes how far into 2010 women must work to earn what men earned in 2009, is set for Tuesday, April 20, 2010. Build on your branch's success from this year and start planning Equal Pay Day 2010 now!

AAUW members also helped lead seven new regional kickoff conferences in their communities to support girls in STEM.
