AAUW NEWS AND EVENTS

AAUW Sponsors “Every Four Years” Exhibit at the Newseum
AAUW is sponsoring an exciting new exhibit opening in February at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. The Newseum, which is known for its interactive displays, is one of D.C.’s leading tourist sites, attracting more than a million visitors each year. The “Every Four Years” exhibit examines the relationship between media and politics, particularly during election years. Visitors can even cast a vote at a voting booth simulator, which highlights the importance of voting and the role AAUW has played in that process through the decades. The AAUW exhibit will run through Inauguration Day 2013, so don’t miss it!

Congratulations, Pennsylvania!
AAUW of Pennsylvania successfully defeated a school voucher bill in the state’s legislature on December 14. Working with Erin Prangley, AAUW associate director of government relations, the group effectively used AAUW Impact Grant funds, a social media campaign, and coalition partnerships to make sure the voucher bill was soundly rejected. AAUW believes that the government should provide quality education to all, not vouchers to a few.

AAUW Hosts Nationwide Title IX Tweet-Chat
On January 6, AAUW hosted Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and the Department of Education’s Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Russlynn Ali for a nationwide “tweet-chat” to answer questions about Title IX. The event showed how effectively AAUW can attract an audience; an hour after the event concluded, Duncan continued to trend nationally on Twitter in the top spot, while #t9talk, the hashtag used for the discussion, was at number six.

Lisa Maatz Shares “Chick History”
Chick History, a blog dedicated to finding new and interesting ways to highlight women’s contributions to history, will this year tell the stories of 52 historical women through the voices of contemporary women. Listen to AAUW’s Director of Public Policy and Government Relations Lisa Maatz describe how Elizabeth Cady Stanton inspired her and continues to be one her “sheroes.”

Sexual Assault in the Military Case: Next Steps
After a U.S. district court dismissed the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund-supported sexual assault in the military case Cioca v. Rumsfeld, the plaintiffs’ lawyer filed an appeal. AAUW Executive Director Linda Hallman and LAF Program Manager Holly Kearl met with the chief counsel to plan AAUW’s continuing role in publicizing the plight of women and men who are the victims of rape and sexual abuse while on active duty. The plaintiffs are part of a documentary premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. In February, a Program in a Box will help AAUW members bring attention to the issue.

College Women Leadership Programs Unite!
AAUW hosted representatives from 12 college women’s leadership programs across the country at our national office in January. Representatives shared their programs, and the group discussed next steps for developing a more formal network and creating program assessment and funding tools. Planning is under way for another meeting this summer. Our collaboration will benefit students nationwide and maximize services for these young women leaders.
