Campus Connections for State and Branch College and University Chairs

October 2011

We are happy to bring you the third edition of Campus Connections, a quarterly e-newsletter that provides updates about AAUW college/university partner membership and activities. AAUW is building resources for those of you who work with the C/U program, and we send a similar version of this newsletter to all C/U representatives. Please share this information with other member leaders in your area!

AAUW News

Shape AAUW's Future by Recruiting E-Student Affiliates!
Encourage any undergraduates attending C/U partner schools near you to fill out the simple online form to become a free e-student affiliate member! By doing this, they’ll receive many of the great benefits of AAUW. To see a list of C/U partners near you, log into the Member Services Database and search by state. Contact Bridgette Behling, manager of C/U relationships, at behlingb@aauw.org for language you can send to C/U representatives to promote this benefit on student Listservs and websites!

Encourage Students to Utilize Member Benefits!
A great benefit of becoming an AAUW college/university partner member is having access to our member benefits, including those that Congressional Federal Credit Union offers. AAUW members, including e-student affiliates, can open accounts with Congressional Federal with only a $5 minimum. Free checking, convenient ATMs, and low interest rates on loans and lines of credit make this an outstanding first bank for students who are breaking out on their own!

Victory in LAF Discrimination Case
AAUW is celebrating a success in the pay and tenure discrimination case Sun v. University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. In the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund-supported case, plaintiff Lulu Sun alleged sex and race discrimination in the promotion process at the university. After a public hearing, the hearing officer ordered the promotion of Sun to full professor and awarded her lost wages. The university received a civil penalty, and administrators must attend a training session on employment discrimination law.

Advocating for College Women on the Hill
The AAUW Action Fund Capitol Hill Lobby Corps has been educating policy makers about the importance of safety on college campuses, and right now they're advocating for the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination (SaVE) Act. This legislation would help prevent sexual assault and violence on campus by requiring schools to spell out their policies, conduct prevention activities, and ensure that victims get the assistance they need. AAUW's Campus Sexual Assault Program in a Box also helps schools achieve the requirements of this bill. Visit our website to learn more about how AAUW is advocating for campus safety on Capitol Hill.

AAUW Earns Another Top Rating from GreatNonprofits

Read the stories about AAUW to find out why we have a five-star rating, and then tell your own story. How does AAUW help you work for social justice?

Special Program Opportunity for C/U Partner Members!
Talk to schools near you about screening Miss Representation, a documentary that shows how mainstream media contributes to the underrepresentation of women in influential positions in America. For a limited time, AAUW C/U partners get a special discounted rate of $200 to screen this film, $95 less than other institutions pay! Schools simply enter AAUWCU2011 as the discount code. Orders must be placed during October and November, but schools can screen the movie at any time during this academic year. It would be perfect for Women’s History Month in March! Encourage schools near you to visit www.missrepresentation.org to take advantage of their C/U partner discount!

Selection Panelists Needed
AAUW’s fellowships and grants selection panelists are seasoned experts in academia and professions who analyze thousands of applications for the approximately $4 million in annual awards AAUW gives to women. We are seeking new talent and expertise for these roles and have extended the deadline to October 14, 2011, for recommendations of reviewers for American Fellowships and International Fellowships. Application review will take place in December 2011. For more information, visit the fellowships and grants selection panels web page, and please pass this information on to your networks!

Campus Connections in Action

Dancing for Activism
The AAUW Baton Rouge (LA) Branch and Louisiana State University teamed up on August 26 to create a Women’s Equality Day flash mob. Students and AAUW branch members made a splash as they danced together and handed out brochures to celebrate the 91st anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment. They spread the message that young women should be active, vote, and be involved in the women’s equality movement. Watch the flash mob video to see dancing as well as interviews with the participants and organizers.
