Campus Connections for State and Branch College and University Chairs

July 2011

We are happy to bring you the second edition of Campus Connections, a quarterly e-newsletter that provides updates on AAUW college/university partner membership, AAUW programs, grant opportunities, and more. AAUW is building resources for those of you who work with the C/U program, and a similar version of this newsletter will also be sent quarterly to all C/U representatives. Please share this information with other member leaders in your area!

Thanks for an Inspiring Convention!
More than 800 members attended the 2011 National Convention June 16–19 in Washington, D.C., and more than 125 member leaders benefitted from updates and valuable recruitment and retention tips from the C/U briefing, workshop, and special-interest group sessions. Look for materials from those sessions soon on the AAUW website. E-mail or call Bridgette Behling at behlingb@aauw.org or 202/728-3308 with any follow-up questions.

Promote AAUW Programs at Colleges and Universities Near You!
Encourage colleges and universities in your area to bring AAUW programs to their campuses in the 2011–12 academic year:

Elect Her – Campus Women Win: Elect Her encourages and trains young women to run for student government on their campuses. In 2011, more than 400 college students were trained at 17 colleges, and 100 percent of participants said that they would recommend the training to a friend. Encourage schools in your area to help close the student government gender gap! We plan to increase the number of trainings by 10 this year, so you’ll want to encourage your local schools to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity for their students. Applications are available online in late August and are due September 30, 2011.

$tart $mart salary negotiation workshops: This program teaches college women who are entering the job market how to benchmark and negotiate a fair salary. More than 130 schools have hosted this training, and numerous students have sent us terrific messages of thanks for what they learned. Help to bring a $tart $mart workshop to a C/U near you throughout the year by contacting us at leadership@aauw.org.

AAUW Campus Action Project grants: Campus Action Projects enable your local student leaders and campus faculty to design and carry out effective programs that implement AAUW’s most current research while enhancing campus offerings, promoting leadership, and improving academic and career outcomes. This year’s CAP projects will highlight AAUW’s research findings in the area of sexual harassment in middle and high schools. Applications for grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 are due October 21, 2011.

National Student Advisory Council: From October through June, SAC members advise AAUW staff on student needs, contribute ideas for combating sex discrimination in higher education and the workplace, promote AAUW and our programs on their campuses, write for AAUW's Dialog blog, and participate in the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders. If you know a student who would be a good candidate for SAC, urge her to apply. Applications will be available on the SAC site the last week of August.

National Conference for College Women Student Leaders Was a Huge Success!
More than 500 college women from all 50 states; Washington, D.C.; Guam; and Jamaica joined AAUW and NASPA for the 2011 National Conference for College Women Student Leaders June 2–4 at the University of Maryland, College Park. Watch student testimonials and hear for yourself why NCCWSL is a life-changing experience for these women. Encourage states, branches, and schools near you to budget now for next year! Urge your branch to support a NCCWSL scholarship, and visit the website so you can inform other members about this event. Also, remind schools that they can send students to represent their graduate programs in our Graduate School Fair next June!

Tell Students and Schools about AAUW’s Educational Grants and Fellowships
Graduate and doctoral students are eligible for many grants and fellowships that AAUW offers: American Fellowships, Career Development Grants, Community Action Grants, International Fellowships, and Selected Professions Fellowships. See the full application process and details online. Raising awareness of this opportunity for women’s education and grassroots programming is a great way to help your community appreciate what we do through AAUW and to attract new members who want to help women and girls. Applications will be available August 1, 2011.

Did You Remind Your Local C/Us to Renew their Memberships?
AAUW college/university partner memberships are due for renewal by June 30 of every year (unless they joined as a new school in 2011). The national office sends three written renewal notices to C/U representatives and the school’s president. Reach out to your local C/U representatives and let them know the benefits of their partnership with AAUW. Remind them to renew using the form included with a renewal notice or encourage them to renew online.

Promote AAUW’s $130 Rate for Colleges and Universities
In celebration of AAUW’s 130 years of breaking through barriers for women and girls, we are extending our special anniversary rate of $130 for new schools and any former C/U partners whose membership lapsed two or more years ago. This rate is valid through June 30, 2012. Around the country, more and more branches and states are using this as a C/U recruitment opportunity — and it’s working! Do you know schools in your area that aren’t yet AAUW C/U partner members? Tell them and their students about this unique opportunity to join for $130 and about the value of being a member!

Welcome New AAUW Partner Members!
Since July 1, 2010, 134 schools have joined AAUW and gained priority access to numerous programs and discounts. Forty-three schools have joined since our last newsletter in April. Please welcome our new partners and be a part of the Big Teal Machine that is rapidly growing our C/U program and engaging hundreds of new students across the country in AAUW programs and initiatives!

Campus Connections in Action
Since 1989, the AAUW St. Lawrence County (NY) Branch has sponsored Open Windows for Girls, a series of educational enrichment grants for low-income girls to attend summer camp. They have partnered with C/U members Clarkson University and the State University of New York, Canton, along with many other institutions, to provide an opportunity for dozens of 10- to 15-year-old girls to attend camps with local colleges, the 4-H Club, and the Girl Scouts. At the camps, the girls can learn about the environment, music, sports, math, science, and technology. AAUW applauds the St. Lawrence County branch for working with C/U partner members to empower these young women. Let us share your successes with your nationwide AAUW community! Send in your stories by e-mailing behlingb@aauw.org.

In between Campus Connections newsletters, get in touch with us on Facebook and Twitter, visit our college/university information page in our Member Center, and subscribe to the AAUW Dialog blog!
