WE>START: An Old South Baton Rouge Initiative
By: Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA

Single mothers were the target audience of this CAP team. Through five consecutive sessions, eight single mothers between the ages of 15-24 learned about overcoming educational barriers. Session topics included: balancing family, work and school, demystifying the education process, study skills, finances, and computer literacy. The goals of these sessions were to provide single mothers with accurate information about attending college, help them set goals, and build sustainable relationships between campus and community members. Transportation, childcare, and family dinners were provided for attendees at each session.
In their final report, the LSU CAP team said they accomplished all of their goals. In the future, the CAP team plans to continue the WE>START program by pursuing additional funding through state monies and private foundations.

The LSU CAP Team was featured on the university home page in February 2009 and an online article called "AAUW Awards Grant to LSU Women's Center and CUP."
