The 2008-09 Campus Action Project provided a platform to address some of the educational barriers faced by low income and girls and young women of color.
Eleven teams from around the country were selected to implement projects based on recommendations from the AAUW Educational Foundation research report Where the Girls Are: The Facts About Gender Equity in Education that was released in spring 2008. The selected projects focus on college preparation and readiness; promoting studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among women and girls; and encouraging young women to be leaders in their communities.
Girls CAN! – Through a series of workshops, events, and projects held throughout the spring, the Bradley University CAP Team in Peoria, Illinois, raised the awareness of 100 girls in the 4th grade about STEM. Read more »
Promoting Mathematical Confidence among Latina Pre-Service Teachers – The CAP Team at California State University at Fullerton, in Fullerton, California, empowered Latinas preparing to be mathematics teachers through team meetings with Latina students, conducting video interviews with the students, creating an interactive website with resources and interview clips, and presenting their findings at campus forums. Helping Immigrant Girls See Themselves in College – The Doane College CAP Team in Crete, Nebraska, paired college women and Hispanic female high school students in the area in mentoring relationships and in April they held a career day for 100 rural students. Read more »
College Connections: A Partnership between Franklin & Marshall College and Columbia High School – The Franklin and Marshall College CAP Team in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, paired 20 college students with 20 ninth graders in mentoring relationships which include attending seven half-day sessions on campus on Saturdays to help the students understand more about college and college life. ISU: Women's Leadership Summit – During a weekend summit in May 2009, the Idaho State Univeresity CAP Team in Pocatello, Idaho, hosted over 50 female high school students from rural parts of Idaho to help them learn about college and leadership. Read more »
We>Start! An Old South Baton Rouge Initiative – Through five consecutive sessions, the Louisiana State University CAP Team in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, helped single mothers learn how to overcome some of the educational barriers they face. Read more »
Empowering Moms, Empowering Minds: Single Moms and College Success – Through two main initiatives the Shenandoah University CAP Team in Winchester, Virginia, addressed issues facing singles moms who want to attend college. Read more »
Decreasing Barriers, Planting SEEDS: Success in Education through understanding Equity and Diversity in Students – Student SUNY Oneonta CAP Team members in Albany, New York, produced a 30-minute documentary featuring interviews with students from the target population about issues and barriers they faced in attending college and how some of those barriers are overcome. Having Our Potential Empowered Mentoring Program – Through a mentoring program with 12 college women students and 12 high school women students, this University of Michigan at Dearborn CAP Team in Dearborn, Michigan, worked to overcome some of the educational barriers low-income and women of color face. Women Open Doors – The University of Scranton CAP Team in Scranton, Pennsylvania, paired 50 high school sophomores with trained college students in a mentoring program focused on college readiness which culminated in a day trip to the university. Read more »
Girls Personal Development Summit for 8th Graders – During a half-day summit for 200 8th grade girls from low income, minority, and foster families, this University of West Florida CAP Team in Pensacola, Florida, helped to prepare girls for college. Read more »
