The Case Support Travel Grant — previously called the Plaintiff Travel Grant — is an annual grant that enables Legal Advocacy Fund-supported plaintiffs, their lawyers, and related experts to speak at state meetings or conventions about LAF-supported cases, sex discrimination issues in the workplace and higher education, and the work of LAF. The grant covers the speaker’s travel, lodging, and meal expenses.

Criteria

State LAF Liaisons can apply for a Case Support Travel Grant for their state meeting or convention and in the application they must demonstrate that the grant will increase the following for LAF 1) visibility, 2) fundraising, and 3) member and public awareness of equity issues in the workplace and/or higher education. The program may target AAUW participants only or a broader audience.

The Educational Foundation board-appointed selection committee may consider the following criteria in selecting recipients of Case Support Travel Grants:

  • The grant would significantly increase awareness of LAF and equity issues in the workplace and/or higher education.
  • The grant would generate major financial support for LAF.
  • The state or region has an ongoing commitment to LAF.
  • The state or region has a proven track record of successful visibility efforts.

Members of the LAF staff are available to work with the states that receive a Case Support Travel Grants on its programming if needed. Contact laf@aauw.org if you need help.

Background

In 1991, with a generous contribution from LAF-supported plaintiff Colleen Roberts (Roberts v. College of the Desert), the LAF Board of Directors began making grants to fund travel for LAF plaintiffs to speak at state and regional AAUW meetings. Based on the enthusiastic response, LAF continues to award a limited number of grants each year.
