Program Description
The University of Michigan, Dearborn College offers university certified courses in fields such as Women’s Studies, Composition, Sociology, and African American Studies at Scott Correctional Facility for Women. The courses are taught by University professors on a volunteer basis. Most women in Scott Prison are minority, single heads of household, poor, and lacking in educational opportunities. Through this program, these women are given hope to overcome the obstacles life has placed before them and get a fresh start after they finish prison. Textbooks are donated and enrollment exceeds available class space. In addition, for current students involved in the program, it also challenges conventional stereotypes about women in prison, and also educates the mentors about the pathways to prison for women. The program has helped to develop socially responsible citizens who produce, acquire, and apply new knowledge that challenges the current “do the crime, do the time” cultural troupe.
