NOTE: This Award is on Hiatus. There will be no 2008 PIE Award.
Deadline: March 14
Each year the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund's Progress in Equity Award recognizes a college or university program that has resulted in significant progress for women on campus. Recipients receive a stipend of up to $10,000 and public recognition throughout their communities, campus, and AAUW.
The first award, in 1987, went to the University of New Mexico's Re-entry Program for Women in Science. The program combined a two-year associate degree in technical fields with a year's paid internship with a local employer. Since that first award, 23 programs have received the Progress in Equity Award and 24 others have received a special distinction award (carrying a monetary stipend) or an honorable mention.
Programs nominated for the award must
- have resulted in significant progress toward equity for women faculty, staff, and/or students;
- be innovative and/or exemplary;
- address the needs of diverse groups of women in terms of race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or class;
- be replicable or adaptable at other institutions;
- be formally affiliated with a college/university in the U.S. (applications from on-line institutions are not eligible).
The PIE Award has recognized efforts in these areas:
- women's athletics
- tenure and promotion for women faculty
- child care for faculty, staff, and/or students
- family leave for employees
- programs and policies to combat sexual harassment
- strategies to mentor women students or junior faculty
- recruitment of women into nontraditional fields
- integration of women's history or other women's issues into the curriculum
- special initiatives for women
AAUW members and nonmembers can nominate programs by completing a nomination form. Entries must be received by March 14.
