James v. Virginia Polytechnic Institute

Case History
A lawsuit brought by the National Women's Law Center on behalf of 12 women student athletes alleging that they experienced discrimination in the process of seeking (and failing) to upgrade women's club sports to varsity status. The case settled out of court in April 1995. Virginia Tech agreed to increase the female varsity athletic participation rate and the women's share of athletic scholarship money to within three and five percent, respectively, of the female share of full-time undergraduate enrollment.
