AAUW's Historical Society Exhibit

AAUW celebrated its 125 years of leardship on November 9, 2006 with an exhibit at the Historical Society of Washington, DC.
San Clemente-Capistrano Bay, CA Branch Branch
The AAUW San Clemente-Capistrano Bay (CA) Branch celebrates 125 years. Members are pictured with balloons and the anniversary cake. Members presented a dramatic look at some historic women who courageously advanced the cause of women at the November branch meeting. Mildred (Babe) Didrikson Zaharias, Abigail Adams, Eleanor Roosevelt, Sandra Day O'Connor, Margaret Sanger and Sally Ride were presented as women whose lives advanced the achievements of women in many arenas.
The presentation was followed by a discussion at the luncheon tables. One representative from each table then presented the group with highlights of her table's ideas about where we see women as they conquer the future! Really intriguing prospects!
Mansfield, OH Branch
AAUW Mansfield (OH) Branch celebrated AAUW's 125th anniversary - and the branch's 72nd anniversary - with a tea party. "We're still doing the same types of things we were doing in 1984 and 1934. We learn to adapt and do things in a new way," said Carol Loveless, former branch president. "We're a group of women who value education and equal rights." The Mansfield News Journal published a story about the party and the branch's history in November.
Venice, FL Branch
At an AAUW Venice (FL) Branch celebration, members dress up to portray women activists of the past, give rousing speeches, and participate in an authentic rally to the tune of "Sister Suffragette" from Mary Poppins. Westminster-Fountain Valley-Huntington Beach, CA Branch
Westminster-Fountain Valley-Huntington Beach celebrated the 125th Anniversary at their AAUW luncheon on Oct. 21. Invitations were sent to past and present community and coalition leaders who have partnered with AAUW, inviting them to come to a luncheon in honor of AAUW's 125th. The luncheon meeting also featured a women's economic security component with financial specialist presenting the 10 myths of financial success. Brevard, NC Branch
Brevard will celebrate by creating an exhibit for the 125th anniversary of AAUW. The exhibit will be shown at the new Transylvania County library during November.
Athens, OH Branch
Athens celebration took part in the Ohio University homecoming parade on Oct. 21, "Back on the Bricks in 2006," with other local women's groups. They stressed "back on the bricks for educational equity". Two of the many brick campus buildings are named for pioneer branch leaders, the late Irma Voigt, PhD, Dean of Women at Ohio U., 1913-48; and Edith Wray, PhD, first woman to head an academic department at Ohio University.
Hot Springs, AR Branch
Over 120 members and guests gathered at the AAUW Hot Springs (AR) Branch Scholarship Luncheon on Dec. 2 to celebrate the 125th anniversary. The room was decorated in white and teal, anniversary balloons floated above the tables, and photos showing highlights of the branch's history were displayed around the room. Ukiah, CA Branch
The Ukiah branch honored AAUW on Oct. 4 with a luncheon and speakers. The branch was also give a plaque by the city in recognition of AAUW's 125 years.
AAUW Maryland Division
The Maryland division celebrated 125 years of AAUW at the its annual Fall Conference, scheduled for Oct. 7, in the scenic mountains of Western Maryland. The program encompassed a look at AAUW's past, present and future.
AAUW North Shore Milwaukee Branch
Members of the North Shore Milwaukee (WI) Branch celebrated the 125th anniversary in style. At their November meeting, members enjoyed balloons, decorations, and a cake with AAUW's logo on it. Some performed a short play, acting out key events from AAUW history, and a timeline showing AAUW's efforts over the years was prominently displayed.

AAUW Santa Fe, NM Branch
AAUW Santa Fe, New Mexico Branch celebrated 125 years of AAUW at the its annual Membership Tea on September 16. Members and friends enjoyed live music, appetizers and a cake with the AAUW 125th logo.
AAUW Tacoma, WA Branch
AAUW Tacoma (WA) Branch celebrated with an " Art Walk" to commemorate how their founding mothers protested the unsanitary conditions of some markets (by counting flies in the establishments), and other radical achievements in the early days of the organization. The Tacoma Branch is celebrating their centennial in May 2007.
AAUW Seattle, WA Branch
Seattle, WA Branch sang Happy Birthday AAUW at our November 18 meeting and then gathered for this picture. Our past president Dana Twight, a certified financial planner, presented a program on Education as the Gateway to Women's Economic Security. We're planning further short 125th commemorative minutes at each of our December through May meetings.
AAUW Independence, MO Branch
On Nov. 28, Ruth Oberhelman, our oldest member and a former Missouri State President reviewed a brief history of AAUW. She reminded members that you did not have to be invited to join AAUW and that she attended her first meeting after reading about it in the newspaper.
AAUW of Michigan
On Nov. 28, 2006, members of AAUW of Michigan gathered in Detroit to celebrate 125 years of dedication and service to the goals of equity, opportunity, and higher education for women and girls. Recognition was given to the founding mothers of AAUW of Michigan, and members applauded the Detroit branch, as it was the first AAUW branch in the state. Beverly Coleman Alexander, ordained minister, gave an inspiring account of her trials and achievements as an African American woman living in Detroit, and thanked AAUW for the scholarship she was awarded years ago.
