Washington — The American Association of University Women issued the following statement:
"There is both great offense and great irony in the controversy surrounding talk show host Don Imus’ comments about the Rutgers University women’s basketball team. The offense comes from the clearly sexist and racist remarks Imus inflicted on the nation. They are an affront to every woman and all people of good will. How ironic, too, that Imus made his insults while we celebrate the 35th anniversary of Title IX, at a time when advocates across the country, including AAUW members, are defending this successful civil rights law from concerted efforts to undermine it. Imus’ intolerant remarks about gifted women athletes show just how much the country still needs Title IX, the law that prohibits sex discrimination in school athletics and in all educational programs that receive federal funds. Title IX is well known for transforming athletic opportunities for women and girls – and is under attack because of its success. Some have even said Title IX’s work is done. It is AAUW's hope that we all take advantage of this national teaching moment that has so clearly illustrated how wrong that notion is – because equity is still an issue."
