WASHINGTON — The American Association of University Women celebrates Women’s Equality Day on August 26th, the 86th anniversary of a woman’s right to vote. Through its Voter Education Campaign, AAUW is renewing efforts to increase female voter turnout in the upcoming elections.
“Women’s Equality Day is a time for all of us to remember that women weren’t ‘given’ the vote – they fought fiercely for that right,” said Ruth Sweetser, president of AAUW. “Women’s votes are a vital tool they can use to shape the policy issues that affect them everyday.”
AAUW’s Voter Education Campaign includes the Woman-to-Woman Voter Turnout manual and PowerPoint presentation that educate women about techniques for mobilizing women voters in their communities.
Another component of AAUW’s Voter Education Campaign is the Congressional Voting Record, which provides women with critical information about how their Congress member voted on equity issues for women and girls.
“The American public deserves to know where elected officials stand when they go to the ballot box,” said Lisa Maatz, AAUW director of public policy and government relations.
Women’s Equality Day commemorates the passing of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in 1920. It not only celebrates this milestone in history, but calls on women to continue to use and value this hard-earned right.
