WASHINGTON, DC – Join Title IX experts Dr. Donna Lopiano, Lisa Maatz and Olympian Nancy Hogshead-Makar, along with NCAA President Myles Brand and premier Title IX researcher Dr. John Cheslock, Thursday at 1:00 pm EST for an audio teleconference on the upcoming Commission on Civil Rights briefing on Title IX Athletics: Accommodating Interest and Abilities.
Rather than focusing on the gender inequalities that continue to plague female athletes, the Commission has decided to address the Department of Education’s (DOE) 2005 “Clarification” – a policy document that opens a huge loophole for schools that want to shirk their responsibility to provide equal sports opportunities for their female students. This “Clarification” conflicts with longstanding DOE policy, violates basic principles of equality under the law and threatens to reverse the enormous progress women and girls have made in sports since the enactment of Title IX. Given this Administration’s repeated attempts to undermine basic Title IX principles, the briefing scheduled by the Commission on Civil Rights is of significant concern to Title IX advocates. Jocelyn Samuels, Vice President for Education and Employment for the National Women’s Law Center, and Judy Sweet, NCAA Consultant/Senior Vice President 2001-2006, are testifying at the hearing.
An advanced copy of their testimonies are available at http://www.nwlc.org/pdf/Testimony%20for%20US%20Commission%20on%20Civil% and http://www1.ncaa.org/membership/ed_outreach/gender_equity/homepage.html, respectively.
