RECENT NEWS AND INFORMATION

Black arrows Resources from One Shared World and the Academy for Educational Development

Research shows that educating girls is one of the best investments in development. When girls are allowed to attend high school, fewer become teenage mothers or infected with HIV/AIDS and more join the workforce so incomes increase and economies grow. The issue is highlighted in two new online resources:

  • A new 13-minute video, "Path to Promise: Girls Making the Grade," in which AED follows two Ugandan girls who are defying the odds to attend high school. The flash video can be found at http://www.aed.org/News/Multimedia/Paths-to-Promise.cfm.
  • A companion book, "Keeping the Promise: Five Benefits of Girls Secondary Education," that makes the case for promoting girl's high school education in the developing world. The PDF of the book can be found at http://www.aed.org/Publications/loader.cfm.

Black arrows Global Summit of Women
AAUW is proud to be a Global Member of the 2008 Global Summit of Women, to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam June 5-7, 2008. Informally called the "Davos for Women" by past participants, the Summit has developed a reputation as an exciting, fact-filled, hands-on gathering of high caliber participants. Now in its 18th year, the Global Summit of Women celebrates women's leadership worldwide by bringing together women business, professional, and governmental leaders from around the world for three days of stimulating sessions led by opinion leaders and influencers who happen to be women. The 2008 Global Summit of Women explores two of the major forces that will impact the 21st century global marketplace – Women and the Asia-Pacific economies. What women can do to access those markets and what we can learn from the women business leaders from the region will form the frame of this global gathering. AAUW members who attend the Summit receive special benefits as a Global Member. View the Global Member discounts here.

The promotion of the final theme for the Imagining Ourselves exhibit was in December, before moving onto another exciting and timely online exhibit, Women, Power and Politics, launching in March 2008. In addition, Imagining Ourselves was the recipient of the 2007 Anita Borg Social Impact Award — an internationally juried prize which honors an individual or team who caused technology to have a positive impact on the lives of women and society.
