2008-09 SAC members meet human rights activist
Naomi Tutu at the 2009 National Conference for
College Women Student Leaders
Lead the way
With AAUW's focus on breaking down the economic and educational barriers that women and girls face, members of AAUW's prestigious Student Advisory Council (SAC) provide essential firsthand accounts of student needs and ideas for combating sex discrimination to AAUW staff through monthly conference calls. They also work on their campuses - sometimes in collaboration with their local AAUW branch - to improve women's rights and opportunities.
SAC members also have many opportunities to develop as leaders and gain valuable résumé-building experience. For example, students are encouraged to help plan women’s equity events on their campuses and in their communities. Student contribute to AAUW's blog Dialog. Students also assist in planning the annual National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL), held in June in Washington, D.C. At the conference, student advisers play essential roles in helping lead programs, introduce speakers, encourage networking among the 500 student attendees, and ensure that the conference runs smoothly.
Student advisers serve a one-year term from October to August. Interested students can apply for subsequent terms each year they remain a student. Applications are available on this page at the end of August each year.
This is a wonderful opportunity for students to have their voices heard by a leading national woman’s organization and gain valuable leadership experience!

"Serving on the SAC was an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to build friendships and collaborate with women student leaders from across the country! I learned so much from my fellow SAC members as well as the incredibly tenacious and committed staff at AAUW. . .Thank you AAUW, for an unforgettable experience!"
— Aeriel Anderson, 2007-2008 SAC Member
"Working with the SAC has opened up my eyes to a whole new world. This world consists of women who seek change, who are leaders and who are putting their foot forward. By being a part of SAC I was able to experience the excellence of advocacy as well as the reward of change."
