U.N. DayOctober 24, 2011
AAUW joins the international community today in commemorating United Nations Day. U.N. Day is celebrated every year on the anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations for the purpose of gaining support for the United Nations and spreading knowledge of its work. The theme of U.N. Day this year is recognizing that the world’s population is expected to reach 7 billion people by the end of the month. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon shared this message in anticipation of the milestone: “Let us unite, seven billion strong, in the name of the global common good.”
AAUW is working to support the U.N.’s initiatives and has recently partnered with the United Nations Population Fund on their 7 Billion Actions campaign. AAUW has a long history of international engagement, including funding scholarships for women from 132 countries; hosting delegations to Israel, Cuba, and South Africa; and participating in coalitions with various international organizations.
