GOP Budget Dead on Arrival in House

April 05, 2011

Today, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), chair of the House Budget Committee, released his budget proposal for fiscal year 2012. This budget is built on the backs of America’s families, robbing seniors, students, and workers in the name of helping America’s corporations get richer by lowering their taxes. Not only would the budget slash vital programs Americans depend on, such as Medicare, Medicaid, and federal student loans, it would bring back programs that have been shown not to work at all, such as school vouchers. Under this plan, Medicare and Medicaid benefits and eligibility would be dramatically reduced, and federal student aid could be cut by up to 15 percent and 2 million recipients, just as students and their families are trying to figure out how to pay for college this year. AAUW opposes this budget because it’s bad for ordinary Americans and our economy, and we urge members of the House and Senate to oppose this harmful plan.

We need grass roots organization to stop the backward slide to the 19th Century before the rise of Labor Unions or the gains in the 20th C with Social Security & Medicare. We are moving backward to a society of increased poverty & unprecedented wealth. We the People are not represented in Congress nor has the President kept his promises for change. Some bold action by the people seems our only hope.

Some drastic change has to happen to solve our budget problem but hopefully this changes won’t affect the most needy in a bad way. Surely there are still other avenues to explore.
