Host a Sotomayor Confirmation Watch PartyJuly 10, 2009
Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings with the Senate Judiciary Committee are set to begin next Monday. Be a part of this historic event and engage family, friends, and your community to discuss the nominee’s stances on issues important to women and their families by hosting a watch party.
AAUW is actively monitoring Judge Sotomayor’s hearings because so many fundamental rights and liberties have been established and are protected by the federal courts, especially the Supreme Court. Judge Sotomayor, if confirmed, would become the first Hispanic and only the third woman Supreme Court justice. Host or attend a watch party in your neighborhood, and be a part of history in the making.
The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET on July 13, with Judge Sotomayor expected to make her opening statement at approximately 2 p.m. ET. Listen for the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to ask questions recently submitted by AAUW, many of which were based on the questions submitted to us by you and other Action Network members. Follow our live blogging during the hearings and submit your comments, and hand out AAUW’s position paper on federal judicial nominations to your party’s attendees as well. If you do host or attend a watch party, please let us know.
In the coming days, AAUW will carefully consider Judge Sotomayor’s record, as we do all judicial nominees. Of critical importance is the nominee’s commitment to following established precedents that preserve decades of progress for women and girls. With so much at stake, AAUW will remain vigilant and outspoken in urging the president and Senate to work together in a consultative process to ensure that only jurists who are committed to upholding the rights of all Americans–in word and in deed–are considered for these esteemed, lifetime appointments.
