New Resources for Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April 01, 2009

AAUW is joining advocacy groups and individuals nationwide in recognizing Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The first observance of SAAM occurred in 2001, and now each April the National Sexual Violence Resource Center promotes national unity and collective activism among advocacy groups on issues of sexual violence throughout the month, with focuses ranging from prevention to survivor recovery. This year the theme is “Prevent Sexual Violence … in Our Workplaces.”

Visit the new Sexual Assault Awareness Month section of the Legal Advocacy Fund online Resource Library to learn more about this year’s theme, sexual assault in the military, sexual assault on campus, and to find resources and SAAM-related events near you.

Are you engaging in any sexual assault–related activism this month?

The Department of Defense is now partnering with Men Can Stop Rape on their Sexual Assault Prevention Campaign. You can read the press release and find PSAs and other materials here: http://www.mencanstoprape.org/info-url2699/info-url_show.htm?doc_id=872912

“‘Men Can Stop Rape is delighted to have this opportunity to assist the U.S. military with this critical issue,’ says Stephen Glaude, Men Can Stop Rape, Inc.’s president and CEO.’Despite the discouraging pictures the media paints about sexual assault in the military, we were heartened to find an infrastructure of personnel in each of the branches and the Department of Defense that deeply cares about this issue. We are proud of this campaign and believe it will have a significant impact on preventing sexual assault.’
